The 2019-2020 bushfires in New South Wales (NSW)

have been unprecedented in their extent and intensity.

The dust traveled to South America, more than 15,000 km.

 

 

In September 2020, historic wildfires on the U.S.

West Coast lofted plumes of smoke high into the

atmosphere. Pushed by prevailing winds that sweep

air from west to east.                       Leipzig, Germany:

11./12.09.20. The consequences of the massive forest fires

on the US west coast can also be felt in Europe: smoke from

California has been pouring over Germany since Friday morning.

Measuring devices from the Leibniz Institute for Tropospheric

Measurement (TROPOS) show a layer of dust that has been floating

over Leipzig since 6 a.m. on Friday. During the course of Friday and

Saturday the shift decreased from 10 to 12 to 5 to 10 kilometers in

height. The layer of smoke continues on Monday. It has now fallen

to around 4 kilometers.

What is PM?

PM stands for particulate matter (also called particle pollution): 

the term for a mixture of solid particles and liquid droplets

found in the air. Some particles, such as dust, dirt, soot, or

smoke, are large or dark enough to be seen with the naked

eye. Others are so small they can only be detected using an

electron microscope.

PM₁₀ : inhalable particles, with diameters that are generally

10 micrometers and smaller.

PM_2.5 : fine inhalable particles, with diameters that are generally

2.5 micrometers and smaller.

How small is 2.5 micrometers? Think about a single hair from

your head. The average human hair is about 70 micrometers

in diameter – making it 30 times larger than the largest fine particle.

of particulate matter 2.5 micrometers and less in diameter (PM2.5) would normally return

from December due to stagnant air.

What will be done?

*   ban vehicles with six wheels or more from entering inner Bangkok between 6am and 9pm

    from December to February to reduce vehicle emissions.

*   school management would be advised to suspend outdoor activities from December to February

    and close schools if severe fine dust pollution continues for longer than three days

*   Outdoor construction would be suspended during thick PM2.5 conditions

*   Dust control measures would also cover the hospitals and hotels that used boilers

 

So, everything will be fine.
