STEVIE'S REACTION TO MARSEILLE WIN

261107-newcastle-gerrard-story2.jpgSteven Gerrard believes every one of his teammates deserves maximum credit for dragging the club out of the Champions League doldrums. Liverpool progressed to the last 16 with a 4-0 thumping of Marseille, their third straight victory after initially struggling in Group A.

Gerrard may have sent his team on their way with a goal after four minutes, but he insists all 11 players deserve the plaudits.

He said: "We made if difficult for ourselves and we were disappointed that it came down to the last game. We needed a big performance, one full of character and hard work. That's what we got. We are very happy with the performance.

"The most important words in the teamtalk were 'cup final'. When the manager says it's a cup final you know you've got to perform, and from the goalkeeper to the front men we did that.

"Every one of us did our job."

Liverpool now await the draw on December 21 knowing they'll face either Seville, Real Madrid, Inter, AC Milan or Barcelona.

PARRY: INTER IS A HUGE TIE

060705-parry_120_01.jpgRick Parry is relishing the prospect of taking on Inter Milan in the last 16 of the Champions League and admitted that it was always going to be a mouthwatering tie for the Reds. The Chief Executive, who was speaking in Nyon following the draw, accepts that the Italian Champions will provide a stern test for Rafael Benitez and his team, but feels they were destined to face a tough side after the Reds finished second in Group A.

"It's a big one, but it was always going to be a big one whoever we had drawn" said Parry.

"It's a very long time since we played them so it'll be a new one for us. They are a very good team, they did very well last year and they are doing well in the Italian league again this season, so it'll be tough but there are no easy ones at this stage.

"They are a very good team, but every team at this stage is a good team, and when you look at who we could have drawn none of them would have been an easy game, so we'll take whoever we get."

Meanwhile, former Reds defender Phil Thompson is confident Liverpool have the personnel and the European know-how to beat the Italians and points to the 2005 victory over Juventus as an example of just what Liverpool can achieve in Europe's premier competition.

"I think Liverpool are equipped to beat Inter Milan," said Thommo.

"I was speaking before the draw about Liverpool in the Champions League and how they can beat anybody.

"I remember them going to Juventus a couple of seasons ago for the second leg, and everyone knew it was going to be extremely difficult, but Liverpool won at home and drew in Italy, which was fantastic result.

"That's what this team is capable of and they are well aware of what it takes to succeed in the Champions League and Inter will know they've been in a game."

I found this on the bbc website and I think english clubs are the best in Europe once again :o :

<H4 class=topsech>Will English clubs rule in Europe?

European Football

Time and time again we hear claims that the English Premier League is the best in the world.

That may or may not be true - and, indeed, is probably impossible to prove - but the fact that four English clubs are likely to be in the draw for the Champions League quarter-finals sends out a very loud message.

With holders AC Milan and La Liga leaders Real Madrid crashing out this week, the odds are stacked in favour of at least one Premier League team reaching the Moscow final on 21 May.

Manchester United and Lionel Messi-deprived Barcelona are currently joint favourites, with Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool (if they see off Inter Milan next Tuesday) not far behind.

An all-English quarter-final or semi-final could well be on the cards too when the draw for both is made by Uefa on 14 March.

United are desperate to win the European Cup 50 years after the Munich tragedy, while Arsenal's brilliance in Milan on Tuesday suggests Arsene Wenger's young team could go all the way.

And, despite the in-fighting at Anfield - or rather between the United States and Dubai - Liverpool are capable of reaching another final, as are Chelsea whose owner Roman Abramovich is rumoured to have booked up half of Moscow for the team and the post-final party celebrations.

Add to this the strong showing so far of Everton, Tottenham and Bolton in the Uefa Cup and it begs the question: will English clubs rule in Europe this season?

What do you think?

All the signs are there again in 2007 just as they were in 2005 , I strongly predict that Liverpool will will the champions league. We are a better side than 2 years ago and apart from a hiccup against the mancs , are form of late has been superb. If we were allowed to have a bet :D:D then Liverpool would bring the baht home !!!.

Taking a look at the other so called contenders , Chelsea dont have the european pedigree and the atmosphere at stamford bridge is nothing when compared to other venues.

Man U , even though they've got one of the best players in the world ( steven gerrard being the best :D ) in christiano ronaldo , their squad just doesnt look like seeing them through to the end of the year , losing larsson and now the injury to Vidic doesnt bode well for the red devils (superb !!!) , plus with captain Neville out and Rooneys poor form , I can see Man U being happy with the premiership.

That leaves us with psv - no chance!! , Roma - will get beat by united , Valencia - will beat Chelsea but loose to Liverpool in the semi's and both Milan and Bayern are too old. I would love to hear some intelligent opinions on who you think is going to win but I'll still be saying Liverpool !!!!!

what r u talking about u cant beat barnsley :o:D:D:D

The obvious choices are schalke or fenerbache and I have a feeling we will draw one or the other.

The team to avoid I think is Arsenal for various reasons.

Agree that getting the mancs now would be better for the police and fans than if we met them in the final ( but imagine beating them in the final :o ).
