PHUKET: The number of people in Phuket looking for work has jumped 34% year on year since late January in the fallout of the Wuhan coronavirus (COVID-19), the Phuket Provincial Employment Office (PPEO) has confirmed.

“After Chinese government banned their citizens from travel abroad because of COVID-19, the number of people coming to register as unemployed has been rising quickly,” PPEO officer Thatkwan Surin told The Phuket News today (Feb 21).

“About 80 people come to register as unemployed every day. In total about 1,000 people have registered as unemployed from Jan 26-Feb 20,” she said.

Talking to owners of a number of established eateries in Patong over the past week, all currently understaffed. All pay well, although comment that with the current crop of tourists tips are well down. Surprisingly Thai customers Continue to be good tippers.

All owners say it’s virtually impossible to get new staff and the quality of those that do turn up do not appear to be interested in actually working.

Difficult times.

Same question here.

I assume they must get something or no one would bother registering as unemployed?

Where do the Thai register?

Been in place quite a number of years. Registered companies are required to provide Social Security by paying 5% (at this time) of salary, staff contribute 5%, and the gov kicks in 5%.  Individuals can sign up for this scheme if self employed or work for mom/pop shop,  and pay a self contribution.

Cover medical insurance, unemployment money, disability money, and a retirement pension. I assume unemployed folks register at Labour office, get a paper to take to the Social office to claim money. No idea how much.
