portable air conditioners.

Has anyone used the portable air conditioners?

[on sale in Watsadu]..

I have a friend who rents and just has a fan..

Thanks in advance for any response.

Be wary of the units they have blowing cool air, usually near the shop entrance. These are not proper A/C, they are "swamp coolers" that blow air moisturized damp air that feels cool but only add to the humidity already in the air.

These "swamp coolers" work well enough in a dry desert environment but not good in an already humid tropical country, they just make everything moldy.

Proper portable A/C are not very practical as the compressor and cooler are all in the same unit in the room requiring a large exhaust pipe, for the extracted air, to go out of a window and a constant emptying of excess condenser water.

They are expensive for what you get, noisy and not very efficient.

Many previous threads on here about portable air conditioners, if you can get the search function to work. :whistling:

If your friend is planning long term rental it would be better to have a chat with the landlord, and come to some agreement about installing a proper two part A/C with the inside blower unit and compressor outside.

Obviously the unit would have to stay when your friend moves but some landlords don't mind that as they can the charge extra for an air conditioned room to the next tenant.

Water cooled air-con is nothing but snake-oil......IT DOES NOT WORK IN PATTAYA......Save your money buy a second fan....

Saw one in Makro, 4,500bht and 6000BTU ......... thought it was OK for the price and convenience.

They are using a couple of them in the tented outside waiting area at Jomtiem/Pattaya immigration. They certainly help there if you are one of the lucky 4-6 people who can get to sit directly in front of them. I wonder how long they will be running... or at some point will they get absent minded about topping the water up?

I wasn't kept waiting long enough to get mouldy! Actually I decided to go inside into the crowds where the AC is a better solution.

I had one a while back, pretty useless really, no better than a fan, at 5 times the cost.

Thanks guys..will not bother ..I guessed they would be noisy and nowhere for the exhaust to go easily.
