PM2.5 count hits 462 in Chiang Rai

The level of PM2.5 dust particles in the air in the North topped 400 micrograms per cubic metre on Friday (March 13).

The Pollution Control Department recorded 462mcg in Chiang Rai province and 361mcg in Mae Hong Son.

The AirVisual application put the dust level in downtown Chiang Mai around 200mcg on Friday morning, high enough to keep it at No 1 on the app’s list of the world’s most polluted cities.

The Asean Specialised Meteorological Centre noted that the number of forest fire hotspots in the Thai North had not risen from 200, so the haze there was likely coming from Myanmar and Laos.

Thalearngsak Petchsuwan of the Pollution Control Department nevertheless said wildfires in Thailand had to be extinguished to lower the pollution level and he urged the Army and the ministries of Interior and Natural Resources and Environment to act.

Looks like they are burning like madmen before the rains start (hopefully).

I smell opportunity here!  Buying air purifiers on the cheap and price gouging when selling...

I'm sure I read that burning has been banned

Yea, love the north without the pollution, but since the pollution is about 200 days a year....it's not worth it

The saddest part is this - you basically have military in power. But even they can't get anyone to follow the laws. Who can, then?

If they have an outbreak of Covid 19 up north anybody with pre-existing respiratory issues (and there would be heaps) are strong candidates to croak.

You won't get any business from people who shop on Lazada.

The military is only interested in lining its pockets.

430 in CM this morning , <deleted> that its coming from other countries . It drops in the evening (if there is a breeze) and starts going again during the night. You can smell the smoke (and its not smoke in Laos or Burma).

I've got 2 purifiers and the AC going all day.

Today the air is very thick here in CR you could almost cut it. Drying your laundry outdoors results in a strong smell of smoke from it.
We badly need some rain to get rid of the worst.

The Educational Hub was a flop and so was the Medical Hub and all others.

Congratulations to the World's Dirtiest City. The Hub of dirty roads.

I noticed the same in Pattaya. I suppose they burn in the night to avoid detection.

You're all get it wrong !

Minister of Public Health, our friend Anutin, was in Chiang Mai yesterday.

That's why it's getting much worse.

''The Pollution Control Department'' ?    They are not  'Controlling Pollution'; so what exactly are they doing ?

Yes; and according to the Xenophobe Anutin it's also full of 'Dirty Farang' !

Possibly a democratically elected and represented government.  The military government has no legitimacy in many eyes.  In short a govt needs to earn the respect of its citizens and this isn't happening in Thailand therefore they are not playing along.

It's not from abroad......don't believe the lies.

Just recently we were near Samoeng, in the hills, air quality was reasonable but on Saturday morning local farmers set the hillsides alight. The fire came so near we could hear it. Since then air quality has been atrocious.

100% a local Thai problem, please don't believe the lies.

You wish? depends where you are located. The locals certainly do all they can to enhance the issue it has to be said!

Look at the map and where the pollution blows in from. https://www.ventusky.com/?p=17.28;102.80;6&l=pm25

More fires this year in the hills west of Hang Dong. Last year that area didn't seem to have such a problem. Fires in Chiang Dao, Phrao , Lampang and just about everywhere else. Seems like this year is a free for all.

It is on the bottom of the priority list for govt if it even made the list at all.

I presume that is a rhetorical question because we all know the answer.

They dont care unless they get money.

I can't stop, Minister Anutin, this is a problem you should help solve instead of raging against your "beloved farangs"!
