Mark Songkran at home, Prayut advises

In a televised speech on Friday (April 10), Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha called on all citizens to refrain from celebrating Songkran, cancel their trips back home and avoid all gatherings during the three-day festival, which kicks off on April 13.

 

The government had last month announced that Songkran holidays will be postponed to later dates in line with efforts to curb the spread of Covid-19.

 

However, the premier said, in keeping with tradition, people can sprinkle water on Buddha images at home and express their gratitude to their parents provided they maintain a 2-metre distance and wear face masks at all times.

 

He also said that the government does not have any immediate plans to extend the current 10pm-4am curfew hours.

As many people will have stocked up with copious amounts of alcohol, due to your pointless ban on sales of it, in some (more to come) provinces, I think you can expect a bit more than a sprinkle of water on Budda images in peoples houses.

People can follow tradition ...and express their gratitude to their parents provided they maintain a 2-metre distance. '"Tradition" dictates that this is done by sprinkling scented water on the parent's hands and feet. The good PM must think his people have long arms!

I understand them cancelling Songkran, but cancelling the public holidays so people still have to work is taking the p***
 

A few days off work might have helped slow the spread (not including South Thailand)

I would have to agree.  It seems that whatever is said, no matter by who, people do the complete opposite.  I noticed last night about 5pm, the roads to the Highways here in Bangkok were more crowded than they have been all week.  It makes one wonder where they were headed.....not sure it matters I guess.  Just sit down, relax and let the .........I await to hear.....

You're probably right from today's point of view, with all those inter provincial travel restrictions (and lack of public transport) now in place. When they cancelled the public holidays outright, I assume that their main objective was to prevent people from traveling home.
