the government is banning almost all activities, not just partying and drinking alcohol, which affects better judgement. many of the stories of people violating curfew the people involved are drunks. 

 

and i am sure you are being sarcastic but 66 million people are under curfew and lock down.

This is getting pretty stupid now. It won't affect me because a) I'm not a huge drinker and b) because I always have a well stocked wine fridge and drinks cabinet (yes, those 2 statements can co-exist for people with discipline and self control), but I really don't see any point to this other than certain people in positions of power enjoy telling others what to do while pretending to be oh so virtuous.

 

This virus really has brought out the worst in people, whether it's police in the UK checking people's shopping, curtain twitchers grassing up their neighbours for going for a walk, local bigwigs in Thailand banning alcohol or puritanical posters on ThaiVisa labeling anyone who values their own liberty and enjoys an occasional glass of wine a raging alcoholic.

Can anyone tell me how this stops virus spreading. Night life is cosed down, restaurants closed etc. This I can understand. But a booze ban has no real logical basis. Please, anyone, tell me the logic behind it.

I dont "know" but perhaps one line of thinking would be if there is no alcohol people are less likely to congregate. Whilst people can and do drink at home privately, with so many not working and home its more likely they may organise parties or get together in groups if alcohol is involved. It also stops some drinking out of control as again nothing to do, stuck in lockdown etc. Might even lead to crime if drunk no money to get more drink and no work and so on. Just possible reasons.

People are still sitting around and eating. Alocohol or not makes no difference. By the way alcohol is availavable in many provinces and even where it's banned can still be aquired.

Yes it did and yet the hundreds of vehicle / motor bike related deaths and injuries sustained over Songkran in any given year do not prompt a ban on alcohol sales, that I am aware of. The same goes for the 7 dangerous days over the Dec / Jan New Year holidays. Disproportionate controls, in my opinion.

One word and one action comes to mind for the governors. Authoritarian and upping the ante for ego face value.

The fact is that road deaths over the Sonkran period are on average or below of every other day on the road. This thread isn't about this. It's about how banning alcohol will help stop the spread of the virus. A virus we are told on a daily basis via infection numbers that is under control.

It is not just Islam, all religions have the same fanatics which try to ban alchohol, remember the prohibition in the US was started by fanatic protestants (methodists, southern baptists etc.) and supported by the catholic abstinence league.

There is a strong movement within the Buddhist hierarchy in Thailand which constantly tries to influence policy regarding alchohol consumption and banning it. They make a lot of noise to show how "pious" they are and want to tell everyone else what to do (mostly while not doing it themselves),. 

Same as religion everywhere.
