(Reuters) - U.S. coronavirus deaths topped 47,000 on Wednesday after rising by a near-record single-day number the previous day, according to a Reuters tally.

A University of Washington model https://covid19.healthdata.org/united-states-of-america, often cited by the White House, projected a total of nearly 66,000 U.S. coronavirus deaths by Aug. 4, an upward revision from its most recent previous estimate of 60,000 deaths. At current rates, U.S. deaths could reach 50,000 later this week.

The first U.S. coronavirus death occurred weeks earlier than previously believed, according to California county health officials who saved tissue samples for weeks until they could be tested. The first U.S. death was on Feb. 6, instead of Feb. 29, they reported.

In the weeks since, the U.S. death toll has soared to the highest in the world.

U.S. deaths totaled 47,050 on Wednesday, with the day's count about 1,800 and some states have yet to report. U.S. deaths increased by 2,792 on Tuesday alone, just shy of a peak of 2,806 deaths in a single day on April 15.

New York state, the epicenter of the U.S. outbreak, reported 474 new deaths on Wednesday, the smallest increase since April 1. Some nearby states such as Pennsylvania and New Jersey reported record single-day deaths tolls on Tuesday.

Health officials have said that deaths are a lagging indicator of the outbreak, coming weeks after patients fall sick, and do not mean stay-at-home restrictions are failing to slow the spread of the virus.

The United States has by far the world's largest number of confirmed coronavirus cases at over 830,000. Cases rose 20,000 so far on Wednesday and were on track to continue the slow but steady decline seen throughout April.

President Donald Trump on Wednesday applauded steps taken by a handful of Republican-led U.S. states, including Georgia, South Carolina and Tennessee, to start reopening their economies despite warnings of a potential fresh surge of coronavirus infections.

Is that a good time to open up the economy again ?

Many Americans want that .

The Virus will get more victims .

But Donald and his ' legal team ' will create a lot of lawsuits against China . And just do everything they can to get reparation money .

Good luck with that .

China will not accept any accusations of negligence etc .

But the US have a lot of experience in suing companies ...

China itself will continue to behave aggressively against it's enemies ( Hong Kong ) as they think the world's attention is distracted right now . I hope that will not end up in a war ... but all know by now , that , once the global supply chains are disrupted , ( nearly all pass by China ) , all importing countries economies will suffer from this . So , may be no war ...?

I saw this model mentioned in a number of places and the website is very user friendly so I started tracking it a bit.

Sadly I think it is currently underestimating future deaths by quite a bit. The model seems to show that after the peak, the number of deaths go down quite quickly, similar to how they increased. If you look at countries like Italy that are indisputably past their peak, they are still reporting a fairly high daily amount of deaths and the daily deaths are not going down quickly. Thus this model underestimates the 'tail', and makes the peak look like the Matterhorn when they are in fact more like table mountain.

Trump and the federal government's own "guidelines" for reopening say that any state should first, among other things, have  a sustained decrease in CV cases over a 14-day period before easing restrictions.

I don't think any of the handful of Southern state led by Republican governors that are moving toward reopening have met that standard in the guidelines. But they're doing it anyway.

I would not trust those numbers. There does seem to be a deliberate agenda at the highest levels, to scare the American public. Scare them into total submission? It is anyone's guess what the agenda is. Hospitals are being given a premium for declaring deaths as Covid, for uninsured patients who die. Why? One would ask why would the feds want to actually beef up the numbers? Even if there is no testing done, all the patient has to do is exhibit "Covid like symptoms", and they can write Covid on the death certificate. This is a scandal of the highest magnitude, that is being perpetrated on the American people.

Hospitals are getting paid more to list patients as Covid-19 and three times as much if the patient goes on a ventilator, according to The Spectator. Last night Senator Dr. Scott Jensen from Minnesota went on The Ingraham Angle to discuss how the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is encouraging American doctors to overcount coronavirus deaths across the US. This was after Dr. Scott Jensen, a Minnesota physician and Republican state senator, told a local station he received a 7-page document coaching him to fill out death certificates with a Covid-19 diagnosis without a lab test to confirm the patient actually had the virus. Dr. Jensen also disclosed that hospitals are paid more if they list patients with a Covid-19 diagnosis.

Sigh, you are another who is ideologically possessed and can't see clearly.

He acted plenty quick enough and even took a lot of flack from Dems who called him Ray Cyst

Can you please tell what he did in February and march up to the middle of the month?

NOTE: The specific date range Feb 1 to mid March. Why?

President Trump issued a "Proclamation on Suspension of Entry as Immigrants and Non immigrants or Persons who Pose a Risk of Transmitting 2019 Novel Coronavirus" on January 31, 2020. This prevents most foreign nationals from being able to enter the U.S. if they have travelled to China within the past 14 days.  President Trump issued a travel ban to European countries in March 2020.

You can see a more sober analysis of this here on this fact checking website. https://www.factcheck.org/2020/04/hospital-payments-and-the-covid-19-death-count/

The minnesota state senator (Jensen) whose interview seemed to start this line of thinking doesn't actually think hospitals are misclassifying cases for financial reasons. Covid cases only earn hospitals 20% more than like-for-like similar non covid cases, and for hospitals the extra 20% doesn't make up for the elective surgeries they had to cancel.

It's true as well there are other countries in the world that have different medical systems and ways of financing them and they also are getting many cases. Some of these countries have a higher rate of infection than the US

It is very likely that deaths of Covid are actually being underestimated, as they are finding out now in Northern Italy and the UK.
