Thai media reported on several developments in the case of a Nakhon Sri Thammarat traffic policeman who tried to stop a car after it went into the back of his motorcycle.

CCTV footage from various angles showed what happened next. The driver of the yellow Mitsubishi Mirage drove off with Pol Sen Sgt-Maj Montri Nitichai, 44, holding onto the hood.

Members of the public can be seen running to try and help the officer as he desperately holds on.

He held on for almost 2 kilometers despite the driver reaching speeds of 100 kmph.

When the driver slowed he managed to jump off without injury while the driver fled the scene.

The incident happened in the Thasala police jurisdiction at the Krung Sri intersection on Wednesday.

Soon investigators had found the distinctive car hidden in a mangosteen orchard at the home of the driver's grandparents.

He was identified as Pongsakorn "New" Nooreuang, 29, whose hometown is in Trang.

Nakhon Sri Thammarat chief of police Pol Maj-Gen Sonthichai Awattanakunthep said that a quick warrant was obtained and the driver was arrested at his home address in Trang on Thursday.

He has been charged with attmpted murder of an officer on duty, reckless driving and fleeing the scene of an accident and ignoring the instructions of a police officer.

New admitted it was him behind the wheel and he further admitted going into the back of the officer.

He said in mitigation that he had dropped his phone and as he was fiddling around trying to retrieve it he took his foot off the brake pedal resulting in the collision.

When the officer stood in front of the car he got spooked, especially as he had a bottle of "krathom" tea in the car and he feared a search.

So he drove off in a panic. He denied attempting to kill the officer though he apparently admitted to going along at speeds up to 100 kmph before regaining his composure, slowing and allowing the officer to jump off.

He added that he was very sorry for what he did. It was wrong.

It was all a misunderstanding...

Be careful in your cell so you don't hurt yourself, or slip in the shower..

Will he get 5-10-20 years for this?

Attempt murder on BIB don't come cheap. Confident they throw the book at him, add on krathom charges (not yet legal), speeding and much more. 5 second decision, equal many years behind bars. Not the brightest bulb.

He just wanted to make merit in the temple, so he needed to do something bad before.

His action will be balanced by a temple visit and a few plates of rice. Life goes on. Mr "New" will turn out to be a good Buddhist and he deserves a second chance after his unintentional "tiny" mistake.

ok than, all is well, 500 baht fine and make sure next time you will not use the phone while driving

Can see this leading to the Officer getting mutiple Wai's, a Bunch of Flowers and a Basket full of that ghastly Chicken Drink they think is healthy but smells and tastes like Bilge Water !     The Brown Envelope will go straight in the Cop's monthly shareout.

Would be better for him he had committed the murder. He would be free and travel the world.

That's how it goes in Thailand - as we all saw

The cop is very lucky that he didnt come away from this in a body bag. I for one am glad he is ok.

"It wasn't Attempted Murder Your Honor, I was just trying out new hood ornaments."

Possibly he had so many amulets and things stuck all over the dashboard, also a myriad of stuff hanging from the rearview mirror, that he simply didn't see the Officer who does appear to be toward the passenger side of centre of the hood.

I bet he dropped a few waiting for the police to come knocking on the door.

Playing with his phone is no excuse for hitting the officer and it just got worse...

everything he did was wrong - should serve time as a convicted felon

The jaguar bonnet emblem looks much better

So is the one on my Roller.  Mine has the advantage of disappearing if somebody tried to  remove it.
