That's plane scary!  I'd rather not fly with this Thai airline, says poster

A Facebook poster published lots of pictures of a Thai airline flight from Don Muang to Udon Thani that left much to be desired regarding the rules about social distancing. 

 

The Thai civil aviation authority (CAAT) have issued guidelines about sitting in alternate seats, wearing masks and for crew to be kitted out in shields. 

 

But Charoen Joo Mookachonpan's flight to the north east featured people crammed in a shuttle bus and waiting close together in line on the tarmac.

 

The poster - who said this was Nok Air - said that the flight used an aircraft with a propellor, something that the passengers were allegedly not told about before. 

 

"If I had known all this I wouldn't have flown," said the Udon native. 

 

He called the flight "scary", a detail picked up by Sanook in their headline.

Worried Nok Air passenger: No social distancing on packed flight

A Nok Air passenger posted on her Facebook page a picture of a packed Nakhon Si Thammarat-Don Meaung flight, expressing her concern at the lack of social distancing.

 

In response, Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT) director-general Chula Sukmanop said the mandatory measure comes into effect only from May 1.

 

“I boarded the plane [Flight DD7809] on Friday [April 24] from Nakhon Si Thammarat, heading to Don Meuang, but the airline notified passengers that it had to make a detour to Trang Airport to pick up additional passengers,” the concerned traveller said.

 

“The detour caused a two-hour delay, not to mention that the social distancing measure and alternate seating to prevent Covid-19 from spreading could not be implemented as the added passengers filled up the plane,” she wrote on Facebook.

 

 

After the post went viral, CAAT director-general Chula responded that the mandatory social distancing measure on board aircraft will come into effect from May 1.

 

“This picture was taken before May 1, while Nok Air had already notified CAAT of operating the new Nakhon Si Thammarat-Trang-Bangkok route, aiming to accommodate more passengers,” he said. “However, from May 1, the social distancing measure must be strictly adhered to, at ticketing booths and until the destination airport.”

 

According to Chula, the measures include restricting each aircraft to carry passengers at a maximum 70 per cent of capacity, flights that take more than 90 minutes can have only two rows of seating, while every passenger must wear a face mask all the time or they will be denied boarding. Food and beverages will not be sold on board to minimise the chance of Covid-19 spreading.

 

Meanwhile, Transport Minister Saksyam Chidchob said he was aware of the situation and had written to Nok Air urging them to improve their measures to address passenger concerns as soon as possible.

 

“I have invited Nok Air representatives to discuss this issue,” he said. “Airlines that ignore the social distancing measures will be issued a warning first, then be fined if the problem persists, and will finally be suspended if they fail to follow Public Health Ministry regulations.”

In other news, the government cannot give Thai Airways a bailout loan because they are a state enterprise and have posted losses three years in a row.

Airlines ask for bailouts and they do this during a Pandemic.

For goodness sake, people need to wake up to reality.  Airlines can't fly aircraft that are a max of 2 thirds full, if they did, they will soon go bust, as each aircraft flight would lose them money.  If you want to fly, suck it up and stop bleating, or take a bus.

There was no misunderstanding.  They need to make a profit, period.   It's simple airline economics, fill the aircraft, or don't fly at all.

A plane is something a carpenter uses. If you are going to critique know it alls. Please use correct terminology.

AFAIK propellor driven aircraft are safer to fly in than jets, for a couple of technical reasons to do with the relative aerodynamics. Without power, most jets glide like a brick.

Please, what IS the correct terminology for that thing with wings which flies thru the air? Whether it be airplane or aeroplane, PLANE is still there.

Must be a seasoned traveller booking sh...y NokAir (the worst of the pack) and be surprised.

NokAir always had turboprops flying and looking into the booking details would have helped (Q400).

Anyone interested to repeat the adventure?

Tomorrow DMK - UTH, oneway 2249(!) Baht, Q400 (turboprop).

But this rip-off will soon end when AirAsia kicks in.

Not cheap but Khon Kaen - Don Mueang onewat for 14xx Baht incl.(!) checked baggage in May.

Would lose her <deleted> altogether if she had flown on the Melbourne to Griffith NSW flight I used to take in a WW2 era de Havilland Heron.  Dam plane had wings made out of rubber!   Flying through turbulence I  would swear black and blue the deflection was 12" in either direction.
