Thailand’s renowned social activist, Srisuwan Janya, has voiced his strong objection to the planned felling of several Yang trees, some of which are thought to be over 100 years old, in the northeastern province of Yasothon.

The Highways Department plans to remove them to enable the doubling of the width of a highway.

The road in question is Highway 23, between Yasothon and Ban Yor, and the trees are on a 3Km stretch between the 182 and 185 kilometer markers. This section of the road is regarded as being among the most picturesque, tree-lined roads in the country.

Thais urge to cut down big old trees never stop to amaze me. Pattaya beach, Jomtien beach, and endless more around the country. Stop the tree cutting madness, think!

'local residents have been protecting the Yang trees for decades, as they provide shade for travelers using the road, adding that the felling amounts to harassment of the local people with a total disregard for the environment.'

Never mind the environment, another highway is more important.

They love it. Money in it sure, but something else.

The Environment Ministry should follow the Malaysian practice of charging per ring to cut down trees !
Make it 100,000 Baht per ring and the Highways people wanting them felled may think twice.
A 100 year old tree would cost them 10,000,000 Baht to fell.
Speciality trees could be even more lucrative.

In Chiang Mai the monks solved the problem by 'ordaining' the threatened trees. it worked and now the trees are adorned with regularly replaced saffron robes and orchids.

When these trees grew up , there was still no tourism in Thailand .

These trees have ' seen ' a lot of change in their life .

Not fair to cut them down now .

Srisuwan Janya, Secretary-General of the Association to Protect the Thai Constitution, has changed the Associations name to: Association to Protect the Thai Constitution and Some Trees.

I am not a tree hugger, but I do hate the way that Thais manage their trees and forest. It amazes me how they can butcher many tress in the process of trimming.

I've seen some the old, beautiful trees out of Yasothon and they make great landmarks. I hope they can figure a way to leave them alone and still upgrade the highways.
