Once in Aberdeen I over heard a Thai wifie in Primart on the phonesaying she was scared of farang. I shouted over "don't be scared, we don't bit" and she was shocked. I then askde her where she came from as I lived in Khon Kaen.  She said she was from Aberdeen and walked away. First Aberdonian I met with an Isanese accent ????

I've given up trying to be sociable & polite when I see another foreigner on the street. Mostly because I get ignored or get no reply, which no longer bothers me. Sometimes it's as if they have not seen you when they obviously have! I think the expat community in Pattaya must be the most anti-social group of expats I've ever come across & I've been to most countries of the world as an expat too! Sad really, but perhaps everyone here just does not want to make new friends or perhaps they are all misfits/rejects from various countries around the world. It could be that the majority of the foreigners here are with Thai's girls & their days are busy fending off the extended family or trying to please their nearest & dearest, which is never easy & will certainly keep them occupied 24/7. Whatever ........... it is certainly not a place where expats have a lively friendly community & are helpful towards others ......... basically it's "dog eat dog" & "losing the shirt off your back" is so easy here. They do say that it takes a "Brit to screw a Brit" & from what I've seen here in the last 20yrs it ain't about to change, hence the saying "it is what it is" ....... fact.

The thing is, whenever you start a conversation with a guy you have never seen before, it will be the same .... What's your name, where do you come from, how long you stay ... or do you live here? Followed by the typical 'I'm here since xx years ...' as everyone wants to get a gold medal or some sort of recognition for the longest years they have been here. 

 

That does get quite boring over time ... I can have the same set of questions in a bar somewhere from a nicer looking girl ... if they open again ????

 

But every now and then, there are also a good bunch of interesting ppl you are running into, and even if the conversation took a bit longer, it was a nice chat.

 

It also depends on looks ... if I see a guy coming up or want to talk to me who has a huge buddha amulete, or worse 3 or 4, around his neck, I run ... because someone is about to give a 1 hour experience and life lesson on Thailand.

 

But I don't need this, because I read TVF ????

First off, for the OP, approaching a guy in any form of drag for casual conversation (anywhere in the world) is going to be considered "showing an interest."  (asking for directions or something like that is another thing)  If you're not looking for a walk on the wild side don't go there.

 

Some nationalities tend to flock together when they encounter each other out in the world.  Probably the most extreme I've seen are the Israelis, and also the Argentines -- they seem to become joined at the hip, and when they gather they'll exclude others.

As has been pointed out to me more than twice, and always by Brits, is that Americans tend to avoid one another, and this was long before the current orange situation.

 

In places like Bkk and Pattaya when I see a farang guy I don't wonder "is he drunk?" but rather "how drunk is he?"

Having never done the house and long-term gf thing, I'm usually open to talking with guys who are settled in, as I'll probably learn stuff that I'm not going to get from books or newspapers.  Aside from the guys trying to run hustles the ones that annoy me most are the guys who take an attitude because they claim to have been in LOS so much longer than myself, and it turns out they can't even count to 10 in Thai.

Something like this. It's one thing to greet or talk to someone when you meet them.

 

It's another thing to randomly just walk up to someone in Tesco's who is just sitting there ... and force him into a conversation.

 

Who knows, the guy sits there and just has a bad day? Not really waiting for a guy to walk up to him and want to chit chat ... just because

he has the same color of skin or is from the same race.

 

Did the OP ever think about that?

 

But I agree, you could at least listen for a second and see whether he needs help or directions. That would be the right thing to do.

Only time I want to talk to strangers is if I sit down and have a cup of coffee somewhere, done that many times in Bangkok/CM/Pattaya.  

But why would I talk to someone when I go shopping at Big C? That would just look silly. But I will listen if a desperate farang try to contact me, at least for 5 seconds.

Digital Nomads, easy to spot, lurks about looking for free internet places .A raggy <deleted> lot full of confidence but no Money. Anyone in Bicycle Lycra Romper attire..Germans in Black Socks. Any. Ferang with a great big FORD sign on his Truck. If you go for a walk, and sit down by a 60 ish ferang retired with good pension thats as near you will get to a ferang worth acknowledging.

Calling someone an idiot when you know nothing about them shows everyone your intelligence. And saying everyone HAS a prejudice doesn't imply it's against people.
