This is the wrong way to look at it. The question you have to ask yourself is how many lives may have been saved thanks to the restrictions that have been put into place. It definitely irritates me sometimes, but at 67, with a good chance to die if I catch it, I am thankful to be alive.

There probably has been more suicides in Thailand since the lockdown than actual covid-19 deaths, but at least you feel safe!

Not a fair comparison at all. Suicide isn't exponentially infectious.

Nor is 56 deaths and 3025 confirmed infections, it's like a drop in the ocean.

You don't seem to understand how exponential infection happens. Thailand took actions that prevented that. So far. Also the official numbers are obviously an undercount.

What they want to avoid most of all is a second wave of infection and more economic hardship that further closures would bring.

So I guess they want to prevent another 25 people from the 70 million population die?

i don't even remember the PRE-Wuhan days........how many decades has it been?

i'm guessing most of us are into self-preservation.

I don't think COVID would do anything to me.  Well, if I haven't gotten it already, I would say 3% chance it would kill me.  KILL.  If I need to eat and get food, i'll take my chances.   see my gf, i'll take my chances.  BUT go to a mall and walk around.......nothing there is worth it.  wait for vaccine.

And what if the vaccine causes people sickness?

They hardly test anyone which means they have no idea how many are infected or not. Yes masks and hand sanitizers are good, most of their restrictions are purely for control. It's not the end of the world if few thousand die, but busted economies are more serious.

Agree to disagree. The global shut downs were necessary.

300,000 dead out of around 8 billion and global economic crisis for years, mass tourism dead, mass unemployment, hmm yes very necessary.

And remember that WE are here, despite the many pandemics that have affected humanity throughout the ages.

There is nothing special about the coronavirus, to the point of making it a threat for the survival of humanity.

The fact is that this society of consumers, many of them living in socialist/nanny states has gone soft.

Well, we might have partly escaped the pain from the virus, but in doing so we have set ourselves up for years of major economic and financial pain... and that is if we are lucky enough to avoid worse, like the massive conflict that is brewing in some corners of the planet...

Yes, totally self inflicted economic damage and increased government monitoring for dessert.

They will have registration using QR codes so that people can be contacted in case of the need to trace them.

What if I don't want to be contacted nor traced?

It is an extra hassle that might cause customers to avoid going to malls unless absolutely necessary. So much for reopening economy...

Good luck installing a tracking App on my Blackberry Passport from 2015.  ????

Snarky and let's face it, a bit snide.  Children in your world will also be denied admittance even though they have no phone.

Yes, let's all take easy shots at Blackberry users and children.

I for one, liked BlackBerry and was sorry to see it lose to Apple.

One thing for BlackBerry, is that is made in Canada, not CHINA!

I won't knowingly buy things from CHINA.

who said it was my world ? you assume i am ok with all of it ? take a minute to scroll through some of my comments and it will be crystal clear my stance on all of this.

you come back with think of the kids ? sad.

ps....are you so sure your phone was made in canada ?

No thanks for visiting malls in the near future. During the closure online shopping could fullfil all my needs.

Only a few items, such as pants I would prefer to try and buy in the shop.

M&S online have a good selection of pants under men's essentials and do free delivery

You don't like free air conditioning?  I like free air conditioning while I'm admiring the local scenery and perhaps getting a bite or a coffee in a nice, cool food court or restaurant.

or to get a look at the beautiful girls. ????

So does that mean running the tracking app and checking in and out with QR codes is going to be required to enter the malls or not?!?

In an English language news article on Sunday, May 10, a government person said the tracking app would be mandatory (contradicting an earlier announcement that it would be voluntary), and promising details about how the app works on Monday, which I could find no sign of. It was also claimed that the phone number would be used to locate and detain anyone possibly exposed, at least until the lab results of a mandatory COVID test were ready. "No app, no entrance." If people don't know they will need a modern, up to date smart phone with that app installed to enter a mall or grocery store starting tomorrow, and the crowds for the lock-down being relaxed resemble the unruly mobs fighting for booze when its lock-down ended, tomorrow could bring lots of chaos.

https://www.nationthailand.com/news/30387615

It was claimed here on TVF that Richard Barrow's Twitter feed pointed to a government video on how the app works internally, but I couldn't find anything.

Later responses to this TVF discussion item talk about luetooth and Apple's IBeacon shopping interaction; but without more information from the government, or release and re-engineering of the app itself, it's difficult to know what's really going on. Note that a check-in only app means you have to suspect and trace/investigate all shoppers in a store the size of a Tesco Extra or Central Festival during the entire period an infected Thai was also in the store, whereas Bluetooth broadcasts have other problems.
