Govt unveils ‘business class’ quarantine option

Wealthy returnees are being given the choice of a luxury upgrade for their mandatory quarantine, the government’s Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) revealed on Thursday (May 21).

State officials have been providing the alternative state quarantine for people “who need more options” during the 14-day quarantine period, said CCSA spokesman Dr Taweesin Visanuyothin.

Currently, returnees are either sent to local quarantine (provided by provincial authorities) or state quarantine (government facilities provided for people who arrive on planes).

However, a third option is available for people who are willing to pay more for a luxury, high-end service. The government calls it “alternate state quarantine”, and is collaborating with luxury hotel operators and hospitals to provide the special privilege.

Among those who can take advantage of the option are foreign returnees with Thai work permits – mostly businesspeople and diplomats. Many are willing to pay more for the quarantine upgrade.

Dr Taweesin added that the government may not be able to continue providing free state quarantine once the state of emergency was lifted and more people began arriving from other countries. However, travellers would be able to choose paid accommodation at hotels that had partnered with hospitals to provide healthcare services. The standard of hotels would range from two-star to luxury.

He also invited interested hotels and hospitals to join the programme by contacting the CCSA with details of the preparations they have made.

It means they are figuring out ways of making money from quarantine in the absence of tourists.

  • Seems it will be high quality quarantine for all  ? Welcom to Thailand but you stay 14 days quarantine before you are allowed out to visit the temples yes sounds like a real winner to revive

Seems the last on the list is foreigners with Thai families. Wish they would relax restrictions on that class of people so I can finally leave and get back to work without worrying I won't be able to

Is this article trying to normalize quarantine ?

The way things are going, it seems they try to normalize everything that it wasn't. Imagine all the young kids growing in this "new normal" society, conditioned to accept all restrictions since they have never known how it used to be in the past, besides the stories being told by their parents/grandparents.

We do not like this quarantine more than anyone else, but it does provide people who really need to come back to Thailand urgently an option to do so.  This is still the right step in the right direction.

Totally agree. For us who want to go back a first important step.

I wonder how many tourists will come if they have to do 2 weeks quarantine before they start their holiday?

And, do they have to pay for the quarantine?

But who pays seems to be a bit vague.

As long as the quarantine rules are the same, I have no problem with wealthier returnees upgrading their accommodation.

Sure, but I hope that means those who choose the 'luxury quarantine' are subject to the exact same rules as all others.

Wonder what a deluxe luxury penthouse suite would cost?  Hint, Hint Hint, I will rent mine out to the Government for a princely sum...Jokes aside:

This whole scenario they are proposing just stinks to high heaven, its all about Money, greed, and finding another way to fill their pockets, while fleecing people who just want to get home....

Seems fair enough to me. 14 days is not too bad if means you can walk around in society without a mask and without fear of covid.  Considering jet lag is 2 week is bit of a lose for me anyways.

Here in Canada they are opening things up yet the cases are rising. It is a s-show, people don't care just like the states, they don't wear masks and think it is all conspiracy. Things are expensive and boring too.  I can see the situation getting worse in the future and probably not getting better.

Once you pass quarantine in Thailand i would guess you could easily go to Cambodia or Vietnam too. I can see a benefit of have very few tourist around, cheap prices, nice local atmosphere.

The borders are still closed, and will be for some time.  No way to walk around without having mask on during your 14 days of isolated quarantine, even in the rooms from what I have seen.  Plus even if you have some more space, your not going anywhere outside of the room....

And ensuring the class/status ladder is kept alive and well. Hideous stuff.

Good news, the ship is sinking but you can upgrade your stateroom with a valid credit card. " Have it your way " Now we need a color chart.

Thanks Dr Weewee.

More delusional rubbish and they have the nerve to actually publish this nonsense. Have any of these "officials" ever actually been anywhere overseas and come back on their own without adult supervision ? Makes ya wonder ?

Where exactly do you think you'll be travelling to where you won't have a two week quarantine/self-isolation on arrival along with a two week quarantine/self-isolation when you return?

Until there's a vaccine, that is the new normal for people travelling.

Fine for me. I want to travel long term. 2 weeks is nothing. I will be jet lagged anyways.

What the government should do is arrange full size apartments with cooking facilities for foreigners in Bangkok or near by.  Have some service that will drop off food every few days.

Once you are out of quarantine you will have your choice of hotels or guesthouses - all cheeep! Beaches will be empty, sound like a paradise. Once they iron out the details, i'll be there.
