Travel boom raises Covid-19 concerns in Chonburi

The rush of people visiting Pattaya and Koh Lan beaches, has raised fears of a fresh outbreak of Covid-19.

The beaches were opened to the public under the third phase of the easing of the nationwide lockdown.

The Ministry of Transport has instructed concerned agencies, especially the Harbour Department that takes care of port and boat services, to ensure that tourists follow social distancing, as well as request cooperation from tourists to constantly comply with virus prevention measures.

On Sunday (June 7), Atirat Rattanaset, Deputy Minister of Transport, made a sudden inspection of the Bali Hai pier in Chonburi province.

He reiterated that despite relaxation of the lockdown, everyone must still strictly follow the preventive measures.

Chonburi province has seen a surge in visitors since it has many tourist attractions, and due to its proximity to Bangkok.

In the close up photo I counted 5 Harbour department employees and 3 tourists. I don't know how the Harbour Department is going to handle this surge in tourism. I think we should create a "Foreign Volunteer Harbour Department" to help answer important questions like where are toilets on the pier and where is the closest McDonalds,

Oh, maybe that one photo taken at that moment doesn't prove there's no domestic tourism. Maybe there's (cough) more to Pattaya and Koh Larn than the pier. Why should Thais need foreigners to tell them where anything is?

Never mind the beaches, judging by the queues at the checkouts in Makro yesterday afternoon, half the Bangkok crowd had decided to come here for the shopping rather then the sea!

I will confirm and repeat what was said already - Sunday afternoon on Jomtien beach was a mad house ... traffic jam , much like a day during Songkran . Beach chair operators were hopping.

---> Police are patrolling and fining any vendor who sells beer. So what is to stop you from crossing the street and buying some booze at Family Mart or 7-Eleven ??? Nothing !

---> Not a parking space along the beach to be found.

QUESTION ... why are cars allowed to park along that narrow strip of south Jomtien beach ?

Curb parking reduces traffic to ONE LANE .

*************************************

There is a small fortune to be made by forcing car owners to get off the road and  pay-for-parking in one of the many empty hotel & condo parking lots across the street .

Keep the beach road open in 2 lanes with NO PARKING on the main road

**** from Anantaya & Sattungrak Restaurant to the end where the sea food restaurants are. ****

Maybe it is a good thing that the hoards of Chinese and Indians are replaced by Thais reclaiming their own country.

Obviously, domestic tourism exists but they do not bring in needed "hard currency" to the country. Nevertheless, it is good to see Thai out enjoying their beautiful country.

Packed with thais.. Hardly. I drove up and down all of jomtien several times and never saw more than handfuls in a few areas.. Unless packed to you means a few hundred in a kilometer.

Probably need to get your eyes checked. First Optical is usually recommended.

I avoided Makro yesterday for that reason.

Domestic tourism has been important to the Pattaya economy for years now. Thai tourists hit Makro, the malls, the movie theaters, the restos, the beaches, the festivals, the water parks etc. Saw quite a few in T21 this past weekend too.

You mean, that Brit "ounce?". Been gone a long time, hasn't been much missed. It's funny how domestic tourism is recognized as an important market segment in all Western countries, yet Western expats refuse to see it as such in Thailand and even deny it exists when it's in front of their faces. Fortunately the Thai gov't knows that it is and is taking some measures to help revive it.

There are trying to say they don't need farang. These people have jobs through family there into cross breeding as well. They work for themselves not the country.

Travel trickle, people are eager to get out after the lockdown, but after a week or two they will settle down again.
