Soccer is an abbreviation of Association (Football), and was brought in to differentiate it from Rugby Football, where as you say, the players beat each other up and pass the ball with their HANDS, and was the fore-runner of 'American' Football.

Same as Baseball and Basketball are played as Rounders and Netball by schoolgirls in England!   PML
