If this happened to me I would eat something later and the wife would eat my dish as well as her own, easily.

 

Sometimes though 'spicy/not spicy' is relative here. Thai 'not spicy' can be spicy!

 

One restaurant I was in a while ago asked how hot I wanted my food and I said 'medium'. Waiter laughed and said you want 5, 10, 15 or 20 chillis?

The problem is you go to a Thai restaurant and don't to eat Thai food. It also sounds like you don't speak Thai. If possible most Thai restaurant will make food without chilies, but if it's precooked it's not possible. Best to ask politely in advance if you can have this dish without chilies. I'm sure they will answer truthfully. 

I once stopped at a southern Thai restaurant and the waitress seeing I was falong warned me it was very hot. I answered her in Thai "if it's not hot it doesn't taste good". It was good but boy was it hot.

They were probably talking about the fussy farang while heating it up in the kitchen.

That is why most Thai restaurants don’t make it . When you open a restaurant you want to have a clientele, ones that come back, so you do your best to please them. If it means changing a dish that is too salty , too hot/ bland, or cold, then so be it. You change it immediately with a smile. Mistakes can happen and if you correct them you keep your customers happy.

Stadtier doesn't understand polite norms in Thailand. The weakness is going to a Thai restaurant and not speaking the language. Making a fuss is considered very rude. Its OK if you want the other patrons and staff to think you are a idiot or worse. 

Learn a simple phrase in Thai to tell the waitress " Is this spicy? I can't eat spicy food"

I was in a restaurant recently and a yound western girl order a local dish, Kao soi , the waitress bought the dish over and the girl just looked at it, said "I dont like the look of that , take it away" .

  There was nothing wrong with the food , it looked rather nice , but the girl just didnt want it .

  I could see the waitress and chef getting annoyed .

I felt like going over to the girl and telling her *You ordered it, you eat it or pay for it *

Stadtler thinks many of you are confused.  Is the restaurant there to provide a service and product for you the patron, or do you exist to consume whatever the restaurant decides to serve you.

i noticed in my lifetime that most people are not capable of speaking up for themselves without being abusive/aggressive  .. so it is a matter of HOW we speak up that matters second .

Unlike many here who would cast the girlfriend aside for such a tragic misdemeanor, my wife of 14 years, if she orders, knows exactly how I like my food as she mostly cooks it.

Then again I am flexible, because when in a country that specialises in hot food I made the effort to adjust accordingly, to such an extent I can manage most Thai dishes in their natural Thai form.

But have also learnt a few to avoid if I am not in the mood for searing heat

If I crave for bland western food I cook at home or KFC but these days I prefer spicy and my wife has an incredible skill of making almost any dish delicious.

I almost always eat at cheap places and I'm rarely disappointed.  Thailand is probably the best place in the world for really good cheap food.  Food carts are the best but sometimes you want to sitdown somewhere that is not on a busy street or not just fried food or noodles.

I was able to eat spicy food (Mexican) and Thai food ( 3 years of 4-1/2 I’m retired here on extension. I’d call between medium and hot. If to spicy to me trying to tolerate the heat spoils the meal...

 

1-1/2 years ago Doc put me on water pill with two others because heart could process fluid intake now ketchup is on the border of spicy.. yes that’s nothing..

 

But if anything a little spicer left ear immediately is in severe pain.. I hate 

it because Mexican and Thai are my favorite...

 

in answer to your question I’d ask for the meal to be not spicy...

I've received a cocktail that was 75% sugar. At Saxophone bar by Victory Monument. 

The guy making it must've poured syrup while yapping with his mouth, not realizing how much he put in. 

I sent it back, asking them to make me a new one, because it was too sweet. I spoke Thai. My friend (chinese) also helped me speak Thai - heard Thais can understand chinese accent better than farang accent. 

They brought me the drink, and after tasting it, turned out they only added more lime juice. So now it was sickeningly sweet and sickeningly sour. Undrinkable. Had I finished that drink, they would have to call me an ambulance. Gave to my friend to make sure I wasn't being a Karen, she also couldn't drink it. 

When the bill came, I refused to pay. They called the manager, and I explained everything. I gave them a chance to make me a new one, and they fcked it up even more. I won't pay for something I can't even drink. The manager was understanding. But no apology. Whatever. 

 

It is in Asian cultures to avoid confrontations. Even if it means you suffer like an idiot. Personally I think it's so dumb (I'm Asian, but I hate this about my fellow people). 

 

One positive thing about the Thai's fear of confrontation is: if you're finding yourself unable to get them to cooperate, be really headstrong about it. Refuse to leave until they do what you think they should do as service providers. Give you your right. They would rather comply rather than fight you. - keep in mind this doesn't apply to girlie bars or the kind of services that are used to old drunk farangs thinking they are God's gift to thai women.

Ive yet to find steak and chips for under Bt.50.00 that I would call edible.

Or any local Thai beef that I would regard as edible, regardless of the price unless it's in a stew and cooked in a slow cooker. Although my nephew brought me some vacuum packed beef steak from up country which was quite good. and grillable. Bt 330 a steak.
