Fearing an election loss, Trump allies push him to be less polarizing

Swampy GOP senators have, IMO, only supported Trump as they feared the electorate would kick them out if they didn't. it's not, IMO, as though they actually have principles other than staying in the swamp. If anyone thinks swampy politicians ever supported the man that was elected to get rid of "them" they ain't been paying attention. Of course if they should think the Donald was going to lose they'd be backstabbing him in a heartbeat. Shades of the Ides of March.

The swamp alluded to would be the very one Trump promised to drain? Or, wait....maybe that was just more trolling by the President?

If he gives in to the losers he deserves to lose. Go Donald, go. 4 more years.

    Go Donald go - please.

  • His message is clear: bigger wall, less health care, more money for myself, my family and friends, further ensuing an America alone policy.

LOL. It took over 200 years to get so swampy and you expect him to change it in 3 1/2 years when opposed at every step by the swamp in Congress?

Yeah, I kinda get it that as far as Trump fans go, he was elected in order to troll, tweet some, and behave badly. Anything that's semi-related to actual presidential stuff, nah. Somehow, don't recall you having the same easy going attitude toward Obama when the Republicans held the majority. Guess you also forgot Trump's term begun with that majority in place.

How does he go about draining the swamp by filling it with the slimiest creatures Washington has ever seen as well as behaving like the mother of all swamp creatures?

I don't really expect him to do any of the stuff he promised. And I don't recall him saying anything much about things taking all that long (like the Wall, remember that?). The Republicans had the majority in the Congress to begin with, in his term.

Then again, your next line of nonsensical defense would be to claim this was all just campaign talk and it doesn't matter. Not like we haven't been through this routine before.

Yep, you'll be in safe hands with Biden, the president you deserve.

In the UK anyone can be prime minister also.

When Americans talk about the 'popular vote', in the UK the current gvt were voted for by 43% of the electorate (Teresa May's gvt got 37%). The last time that more than 50% of the people voted for a British government in a general election was 1936.

Well of course the big difference is that people don't elect the PM, the party does... same in Australia. The biggest difference is that when elections are called, you don't have to deal with campaigning that starts about 18 months before... and if you add mid-terms to that, a president spends more time campaigning than governing. American's seem proud of their system, but IMO it's a mess and totally broken.

For the 1st 2 years of his presidency, Trump had a Republican House and Senate.

So was it that Congressed who forced him to ease regulations on the banks and hedge funds?

Was it that Congress who forced him to sign tax reduction bills that especially favored the real estate industry and pass through partnerships? Which is exactly the kind of businesses he mostly has.

Was it that Congress who forced him to retreat on his pledge to crack down on Big Pharma?

Was it that Congress who compelled him to hire oil, gas, and coal lobbyists to oversee environmental regulations?

Was it that Congress who turned the Consumer Protection Bureau to a pro big business agency?

Was it that Congress that forced him to hire an Education Secretary who has protected corrupt online educational institutes who cheated students out of billions?

Trump got TWO conservative judges into SCOTUS. Pretty good going in one term. probably another next term.

If he hadn't done anything else ( like reducing the unemployment rate ) that'd be a good result.

Yes he got into office 2 right wing pro-corporate, anti-worker justices. Just the kind of justices that would be nominated by any right wing President. Or is it that you imagine that Trump should get some kind of credit for there being vacancies in the first place?

I'm guessing that you and the people who approved of your answer don't quite understand what it means to be the head of the executive branch of the government.

But it's true that he doesn't run things, then why would you ever expect him to drain the swamp?

Very true. In the UK we don't elect the head of state, who has no real power anyway, unlike the US president.

Yeah, that influence was astoundingly evident at his Rushmore campaign rally.  :cheesy:

Think about it this way: Whenever you see an ugly right-wing rally you see Trump signs and Trump flags.  Now go and start combing through images of the riots or CHOP. You know what you don’t see? A bunch of “Biden 2020” placards.   This tells you a lot about the relative health of the two political parties right now.

Saying that Trump "runs the country" is like saying the queen of the UK "runs Britain".

Instead of focusing on Trump fans and your disdain for them, you should be focusing on your own party, which is about the poorest excuse for an opposition party I've ever seen.

I had the biggest laugh today when I discovered what then Sen. Barack Obama had to say about Biden during his 2008 presidential campaign. This comes from the book: "Game Change" by John Heilemann and Mark Halperin.

"How many times is Biden gonna say something stupid?"

Sen. Barack Obama, 2008

He hasn't gotten any better in the last 12 years, that's for sure.

At one point Obama was quite close to replacing him with Hillary Clinton

Have you forgotten that congress ( including GOP ) didn't vote him the money to build the wall? A part of it has been built anyway.

Of course a lot was campaign talk, just like all politicians engage in. Surely you don't actually believe anything any politician says in an election campaign, do you?

Since Trump likes to take credit for anything positive that happens in the USA, it would appear that he thinks he's running things.  But I agree, Trump doesn't do much besides play golf and tweet nonsense to his minions.

And yet you claim that it's congress that runs things. That Trump is no more than a figurehead like the Queen of England. It is to laugh.

From the same book you just quoted...quite close is obviously a lie on your part or you didnt read the book...which one do you want to go with?:

Former White House chief of staff Bill Daley admitted Friday that he had supported efforts to figure out whether it wouldn’t be better to jettison Joe.

"Lots of issues in 2011 were looked at," Daley told CBS News. "And it was looked at. But it was never seriously looked at in the sense that there was a belief that it ought to be done or needed to be done, and the truth is that any research that was done confirmed the fact that it was not an issue voters cared about or thought should be done."

Senior adviser David Plouffe tweeted Thursday evening that whatever the campaign was up to, the vice-president never enjoyed anything less than the president's full confidence.

Maybe because they aren't completely daft, and maybe they didn't believe that Mexico will pay for it. But to return to your previous bit of reasoning - if Trump is essentially powerless to do anything (blame Congress, blame the Democrats, whatever), then how can he drain the swamp?

As for "part of it being built", you are aware of the gap between Trump's fantasies regarding the wall and the actual construction and solutions applied, right? Not like this wasn't extensively covered even on this forum alone. Or that some of the "new" construction is actually related to past administrations and things being done over time.

And here we come to the last ditch defense, it was just campaign talk. It was a joke. He was trolling. And anyway it doesn't matter because yada yada yada. Just to refresh your memory, Trump went on about the wall (and other campaign stuff) well into his term.

Yeah, and that doesn't have a lot to do with my post, does it? Even while disregarding the positions of said two appointments and what they imply for actual Trump supporters and the rest of America. Not sure how you see getting conservative judges appointed when the Republicans held the majority as a great success. It is a "result" any right-wing alternative to Trump would have accomplished, and probably with less resistance and drama.

Posts that reveal an ignorance of British governance are as common as posts that reveal an ignorance of the governance of the US.

A post like this that in one short sentence reveals ignorance of both is a very rare thing.
