Thailand's immigration police gave details of developments in the smashing of a Nigerian Romance Scam.

The case relates to the arrest of two Nigerian men and a Thai woman who were running a Romance Scam out of Phayathai district in Bangkok.

Investigations led to a man called Thongchai who had persuaded 14 of his neighbors in Kalasin to open bank accounts linked to ATM cards.

He didn't say why he wanted them but paid 1,500 baht a time.

The accounts were used to gather and launder money in the scheme that defrauded lonely hearts Thai women.

Some of the owners of the accounts got wind of the fact their names were being used for illegal activity and cancelled their accounts meaning that the money of some victims was recovered.

Thongchai was eventually arrested at a bank after information was received that he was visiting a branch.

Thongchai was also wanted on a warrant for fraud and computer crime violations in Nakhon Ratchasima.

Information from his neighbors suggested that he met a foreign man while in prison and thereafter made frequent trips to Bangkok.

So broke that they'll let someone open bank accounts in their name for the equivalent of $50 US. If you want to put a dent in crime, put a dent in poverty in Thailand first. Same for marriage scams...so many false immigration marriages...people so poor they'll lend their documents to anyone with a few thousand baht in hand.

I wonder, does anyone really think the Thai police and immigration departments construct those huge graphic walls as part of an investigation?  The cost must be stupidly huge given their budget constraints.

They get prisoners to make them.
