Tetanus Boost & Lab Tests in HH (FYI)

Hello there,

Just wanted to share few things health-related for those interested.

1) Tetanus Boost - I've got accidentally stepped on a crab/crab-shell while doing my regular sea-walk on the Hua Hin beach...Just a little blood spot on my heel, but somewhat deep & slightly painful. I know I had last time tetanus vaccine about 10-11 years ago, and If you haven't had a tetanus boost vaccine (following the initial 3 course base vaccine) every 5 years, you should get one to make sure it still protects you. So I've gone to find out where to have it and what is the cost.

First, I went to the Bangkok Hospital, and got a quote of 370 BHT for a tetanus boost, that included administration (injecting) it. No doctor necessary to prescribe it.

Just to check another place too, I went to the San Paulo Hospital and got the quote of 1500 BHT! They said that's because they needed a doctor to prescribe it first, then a nurse to administer it.

I then went to the Hua Hin General Hospital - Purple building (5. or 6. floor I guess) which is the private patients area. They spoke some English there, good enough to understand each other. They quoted a cost of 500 BHT, which included also a doctor's check & prescription, the vaccine and the nurse administering it. I opted for this, got the vaccine booster the same day. Fully satisfied with the service.

Funny thing, I've thought it would be much more expensive to get it at the BKK Hospital (which happen to be very close my condo), than at San Paulo or HH General Hospital...well I was wrong here.

They all also accept CC payments.

2) I also wanted to check my blood biochemistry as I started "experimenting" with the keto-diet.

Went to check two places, close to each other. First went to the Hua Hin Central Lab at 23 Petchkasem Rd., (HH cental area). Relatively small lab, staffed by 2-3 persons. Looked clean, but a bit dated. However, they were very kind, somewhat limited English but good enough for basic explanations. They had various tests availability and some as a part of a package. I've chosen an extended standard test 900 BHT base price (urin & blood biochem + Lipid profile, etc) and added a HbA1c (diabetes 2 average) for additional 350 BHT. The sample taking was painless, and did not leave a mark on my skin/vein. The results sent by email the same day (approx 4-5 hrs later). They did not accept CC payment, but cash only at the time I've visited them. They all also do keto-test, for those interested.

Another place was just 50m forward, MT Lab, the same road-side, next to the dentists...This lab looked more "modern" and very good English speaking staff. The cost was almost the same, the basic + Lipid profile included was 1100 BHT (although had an extra blood check item that I did not need), and HBA1C was the same price as the other lab. Very kind staff too. But I did not do my check with them so cannot comment on it.

They all also do keto-test, for those interested.

They accept CC payments (but need to check, I think its only if it is a Thai bank cc)

That's all folks...a little bit health-related reporting ????

For Tetanus I would go to the Red Cross - I would say it would probably have cost you around 200 Baht

Thanks darrendsd for an useful tip.

They probably don't have a doctor to check/exam it beforehand (as they do in the HH city hospital...worth checking though) so probably it comes almost to the same in terms of the tetanus boost vacc cost (the Doc's exam 200-300 Baht, can't remember, but they specify it on the back of the bill)
