I wish that were true.  I am in Indonesia right now and am in a state of Flux.  We are unsure how things will be interpreted.  Here is the US embassy email reference the just announced policy.

Indonesian Immigration has announced that foreign nationals who arrived on the “visa-free” or “visa-on-arrival” mechanisms whose visas have expired with need to take the following steps within 30 days from July 13 (visit the Indonesian Immigration website for more detail):

·      Those who arrived on “visa-free” (BVK) must leave Indonesia within 30 days, or may face fines, detention, and deportation.

·      Those who arrived on “visa-on-arrival” (VKSK) may, within 30 days from July 13, apply for an extension, but per this policy will only receive an extension while the pandemic status continues and there are no flights available for you to return to the United States.  Note that flight routings to the United States are available and U.S. citizens, per this policy, would not be eligible for visa extensions.  Failure to depart within 30 days may result in fines, detention, and deportation.

As you can see visa free entries need to leave within 30 days.  Visa on arrival may need to leave within 30 days.  Immigration on Bali said we can extend but in Jakarta things may be different.

That's right. Free VOA (BVK) holders (which I am) currently are required to leave no later than August 11. Lots of confusion with the VSVK visa which allows an extension with payment. According to the Bali Sun, there are about 3,000 Aussies in Bali with BVK visas and need to leave, plus there are surely 1,000's more of different nationalities in the same boat. Big problem is there are no alternative places open to go to and no flights. It's a royal mess!!!

True to some extent perhaps, but not across the board. I think if one chooses to live in Bali or a majority Christian area they'll be welcomed and able to live quite a happy life. Although the infrastructure is not as good as Thailand and driving standards are even lower than here.

Indeed it rains a lot of the time but at least it's warm to hot year-round, same as Thailand but in contrast to Vietnam, for instance, which has a dreadful climate north of Nha Trang (cold, mostly cloudy, drizzly winters and hot extremely humid summers with occasional rain and chance of a typhoon during the height of summer).

Jakarta roads gridlocked and even worse than Bangkok? Check.

To the OP, clearly you were wrong. I don't understand the point of these posts, which are very quickly refuted.

I believe that Thailand's policy so far has been more generous than Indonesia's and there is a good chance that a further amnesty extension or some other kind of policy will be implemented, allowing stranded foreigners to continue staying legally until things get back to normal.

Say what you want about Thailand but it's not always greener on the other side.

Also, there are FAR more foreigners in Thailand than Indonesia, therefore, for the Indonesian government to "clear out" foreigners, is less of a task than Thailand, not withstanding the logistics of getting foreigners out of remote islands, but my guess is very few are likely to be in such a situation. The vast majority are in Bali and Jakarta, places with international airports and at least some flights out.
