The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) will seek Cabinet approval for its plan to boost domestic tourism by targeting affluent Thais, who can afford overseas trips, adding that between 12 and 13 million Thais travelled abroad last year, spending an estimated 400 billion baht, according to the authority’s Governor, Mr. Governor Yutthasak Supasorn today.

The TAT will also focus on expatriates living in Thailand, who can afford to travel around the country, as well as people attending seminars organized by state agencies.

Mr. Yutthasak said that the TAT’s plan aims to promote tourism to locations which are over 300km from potential customer’s homes or points of arrival, in the case of incoming foreign visitors, because this will help to distribute tourism revenues.

T.A.T you lost me as an expat tourist when I was asked to pay 10X the Thai price to enter a famous waterfall in Kanchanaburi... I'll give you the same remark as I gave the officer in the ticket booth...

Reign in your police force (checkpoints)

An interesting comment and yes, I accept there are many disgruntled ex-pats who have bad experiences at checkpoints, but from my own personal experience, I have never encountered any problems in recent years. During my last 6 years in Thailand I used to drive my pick-up five times a year between Khon Kaen and Chiang Mai  (647 kms) on just two routes 12 (Khon Kaen, Lomsak, Phitsanulok) and 11 (Phitsanulok, Uttaradit, Den Chai, Lampang and Chiang Mai). On the outward journey I never experienced a permanent checkpoint, just an occasional "mobile" unit checking licences, road tax, speed etc. On the return journey there were two permanent checkpoints one between Lamphun and Lampang near the mountain section of route 11, and the second, between Den Chai and Uttaradit also on route 11. There were none on route 12 other than a "mobile" police unit. Apart from having to show my Thai driving licence on few occasions, I was never pulled over and questioned on other matters and was courteously waved on. Traffic and Highway Police no problems for me.

But what is the plan exactly?

How will they entice these groups of people to travel?

The article is so short on details, that there aren't any!

I  too stopped becoming a " Expat Tourist " after a visit to a famous Waterfall in Chantaburi .

I refused to enter and told the Missus and my Daughter to go on in without me.

My family entered, along with other members of her family, and they returned about 4 Hours later to find me quite happy to sit and watch the World go by with a Cold One.

They, on the other hand were fuming that I had embarrassed them all by refusing to pay the greatly inflated " Farang Entrance Fee ", and also telling the Kiosk Teller where to shove the Fee.

Oh ! Happy days now spent at " Ourgate "

Sign me up! Can't wait to go out and see all that rubbish flying about/laying on the roadside, the few bins over-flowing with bags of rubbish, tuk-tuk drivers who orgasm when they see a "foreign tourist", restaurant staff who stand aloof - often smileless, taxi drivers who think they're Michael Schumacher, me being treated like a f*****g moron at national parks - even after the missus explains that I live and work here as I'm asked with a stupid, dry smile to pay the farang price.

Yes, this is exactly what got me through lockdown. Great tourist drive/initiative. Thank you, but think I'll put the money on my kid's bank account - he'll have more to spend the I'm dead and gone.

Yes, but the issue being, trashy pbs aside, these are intelligent people that enjoy broadening their horizons. They want to spend time in places that see ALL people as equal.
