The owner of a resort on Koh Lipe Island in Satun province has defended his decision to build a stone wall around the resort after it came in for criticism from netizens.

Many questioned whether it was appropriate to put up a stonewall on a tourist attraction or whether the resort had the right to do so after someone shared the pictures of the wall on the Internet.

Manit Kaweerat, Bundhaya Resort’s owner, said that he owned the land and had a legal document to build the stonewall. He said he had also notified the situation to Lipe Police Station.

He said the wall was built to prevent waves from entering the resort. It might look unattractive now but it will be decorated in the future, he said.

Stones are not very effective in blocking waves but they were able to be transported during the low season before the tourist high season begins in November.
