Hotel body demands govt reopen the country to foreigners

The Thai Hotel Association (THA) has demanded that the government reopen the country to foreigners, especially since occupancy in hotels is almost zero, with some small operators being forced to close up.

 

Marisa Sukosol Nunbhakdi, THA chairman, said the government should consider specific countries or cities and come up with promotions to bring back tourists. 

 

She added that operators in the tourism sector were also finding it difficult to take loans, and called on the government to set up a fund to help them out. 

 

Separately, Tourism and Sports Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn said the prime minister has spoken to Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration about allowing foreign tourists to visit specific areas in Phuket. 

 

He said if this scheme proves to be effective, it will be applied to other provinces such as Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Ubon Ratchathani, Udon Thani or Chonburi.

Lets see how that plays out for you Mrs. Chairman.  Demanding normally gets a swift penalty kick to the silenced zone.  Be careful for what you ask for.  You may find that the government swiftly reviews the land holdings on the hotel locations and quickly moves in to close them if all the ducks are not in a row with the ownership, and land papers.  Best not to rock the boat that the Tourism minister is already bailing out.

The quoted source in the original post is a senior member of the Sukosol family. The Sukosol group are well known to be ambassadors for the hotel industry as well as promotors of ecological and sustainable development.

 

The Sukosol group are absolutely compliant in all regulatory matters and in many regards set the standard that other operators aspire to.

while the government worries are understood, given thailand limited resources to deal with

a serious outbreak, thailand must open the borders soon.

the initial lockdown was meant to allow time for the health industry and public to learn and organise

themselves for the new situation.

now that this goal has been achived, thailand , like the rest of the world, must leatn how to leave with this virus, and learn it fast. it is just impossible to let the virus take over our lives.

this virus is a very common corona virus, and the only way is to learn how to live besides it, not without it.

We all know what this means:

-easen visa procedures

-eradicate scams

-safe roads

-correct pricing

-logic anti-corona regulations (ex if yr country issues a certificate, that will do it)

-a helping police force

-clean beaches

-ban pollution

-educated natives against racism (fe. a minister treating alliens as dirty people should be dismissed and sued)

-use a correct exchange rate policy

-this list is not exhaustive...

 

So this is not only about simply reopen. Its about a fundamental cahnge of mentality.

-clean beaches - its the ships passing by

-ban pollution -  some hope

-use a correct exchange rate policy   - it is what it is

I can see where OP's coming from but I have no connection to the tourism industry and can therefore say I LIKE Thailand far better without tourists clogging the place up. Last few months have been really pleasant (except of course I can't travel anywhere else either).

Thailand needs tourists like it needs more submarines. Keep the doors shut.

 

Compared to almost anywhere else in the world right now, here is less authoritarian (in terms of virus crackdowns) and more easy-going. Unable to fulfil my usual travel schedule, I can't think of anywhere better to be and tourists would only spoil it (again).

Gee. Fighting on sleazy Sikandvomit? Whatever is the world coming too? So, every Caucasian is a baddie, right, and should you be one, you should be denied entry too. And would you have it that drunken Thais brawling in the myriad karaoke joints across the land every night also be shunned? Or, just maybe, there is another world beyond your limited scope where families and 'normal' people visiting Thailand have nary an issue...

Have every sympathy with hoteliers and ordinary Thais losing big with the way the gov has handled things. They do so not for the wellbeing of the people, but for their own trivial ideological ends.

I’ve stayed in Udon Thani many times over the years and cannot think of one “resort” I would want to be couped up in for 2 weeks. In fact I’m pretty sure one doesnt even exist!

i respectfully disaggree.

i find the thai mentality and hospitality quite good, among the best in the world.

this includes:

*correct and easy exchange rate (really, the smallest spreads i found on this planet!)

*a helping police force - yes, thai police are helping and friendly, just see how the police shoot

people in the USA !!

*visa process - find it qbubibtbebbbbmcbbvx

* pollution, corroption ext. - this is part of the deal. you cannot have it all.

 

THAILAND WILL PREVAIL !!

Without quarantine?   People going to Thailand now are going their because they have families, not to sit on a beach and read a book.  Thailand has treated tourist horribly since the army too power.  If tourists got 90 day stamps, Thailand would look more attractive and all sorts of good things will happen.  Even now they want to get rid of the foreigners that are there and replace them with new ones.  There is just no logic just pettiness and foolishness.

That's a great Idea...partially flood the hotel and turn it into a semi-dry dock for submarine repairs
