Media and posters show little sympathy for Pattaya’s homeless

Sophon Cable TV reported on Facebook that the homeless and beggars were all over Pattaya. 

 

But they showed little sympathy for their countryfolk - an attitude echoed by posters on the site with one calling them the "dregs of society".

 

Sophon said that since the release from lockdown only Thais were going out to the reopened clubs and nightlife spots. A mere handful were foreigners. 

 

They suggested that the homeless and beggars were preying on the Thais with many happy to accept a few coins.

 

There were homeless sleeping in doorways, outside buildings, and on the beach where the cool breezes provided some relief.

Some brought their meagre possessions with them, some were clearly not mentally stable, they suggested. 

 

It was unsightly.

 

Efforts by the authorities to tackle the problem were insufficient. 

 

They recognised that some were out of work.

 

Posters on the site weighed in with a stream of negative comments showing a lack of compassion.

 

"Thitaporn" claimed that they don't want food. If they were given money they just went and bought "lao khao" (white spirit, a cheap Thai liquor). She said that she had been followed to ATMs outside 7-Eleven. That was scary. She said that it was better to feed stray cats and dogs.

"Chanisara" called for the authorities to sort out the widespread problem once and for all. 

 

But "Sanny Sandee" went further suggesting that the homeless had hands and legs and were not incapable (of work).

She called them "khaya sangkhom" (society's rubbish or the dregs of society). 

 

Thaivisa notes that Thailand prides itself on being a caring society. Such comments fly in the face of that assessment.

Thai are normaly really empathic! But i have notice other attitude even from my wife. She normaly really concerned about others. One day i was going to help man who lay down on street front of 7/11 , my wife deny me and say "don't he is crazy person". Don't know where she get that idea. But all people just walk away. In my coundry we call ambulance or police to haddle .

Poverty and addiction are not just an individual problems, they are problem stemming from the heart of society at large. They thrive on poor education, hopelessness, and inequality. When a society doesn't work to minimise the gaps and holes that exist between those at the top, and those at the bottom, then poverty and addiction rise up like a stench that effects us all, as can be seen from the callous and heartless responses from local Netizens. I always believed Budhism to be a compassionate religion, see how they care for the diseased and often dangerous soi dogs for example. Is this now the new face of the religion?

I'm in 2 minds about this story. I'm currently stuck in Blackpool in UK away from the wife and kid.

In the town every day are about 10-20 beggars. All smoke ciggies and weed, drink and general ARE 'dregs' of society and are happy it seems with this lifestyle.

 

BUT, my heart goes out to all those made homeless and unemployed through no fault of their own and are genuinely good people but down on their luck, want to work and strive to make a better life

Indeed a sad sight to see the homeless - and I don't mean the begging gangs that work around the country - and we do not really know what bad luck put them in such a situation. Nevertheless, I recently saw a couple of homeless chaps sleeping in front of a shop on the main road near home...both had their sandals neatly put together near their feet, and both were wearing face masks. A lesson there...

These are the few that you can see what about the many unseen destitute and desperate Thais so badly hit by the covid crisis owing no fault of their own. Surely they deserve help and quickly. So Sad

The government's apparent paranoia regarding Covid-19 has gone too far.  It's OK for the fat cats and rich but the majority of Thai's are really suffering needlessly. I'm getting sick of messages from acquaintances needing some money for food or to help pay the rent.  It's unbelievable  that the govt is spending huge sums of money on submarines while they let millions of Thais languish out of work, with no income.  Especially so with the political protests at an increasing level.  Does this govt have a death wish?  Earlier on Thais had some hope but now they realize the govt could not care less.  There are already many medications proven to be successful against Covid but the govt are conveniently ignoring them and waiting on the mythical vaccine.  In the meantime the govt struts around feeling like a super power in charge of their pathetic submarine fleet. LOL

It’s a tragic way to live, and happens all over the world. I’ve seen a rise in  homeless  in Thailand in the last few years. Some are families  with kids !  Not all are drug addicts or drunks. As we all know, a few months of extremely bad luck, loosing your job, sickness, unable to find work because of your age, all this leads to being homeless. One youth on crutches outside a 7/11 on beach road, terrible state on one leg, he looked about 14. I bought him food every day he was there, and he often cried quietly. It broke my heart. One of the street girls said they’d called for help, but nobody came. After a while he disappeared, so I’m hoping that help came. I thought about him every day, I felt terrible. Who do you call for help ?

I dont think there is any help only people like yourself, no government backed schemes here

A sign of a social system in a spiral, where beggars litter the streets and wealthy live in ivory towers the divide grows ever wider. But you won't find Prayut & Co on the streets at night handing out food parcels, they are motor-caded around in luxury to well planned destinations devoid of real life.

Yea, but let's buy 2 submarines 'essential' for the country's defence, even if soon, there won't be much to defend!!!

Obviously if homeless their going to beg to survive and i can't blame them. I've helped many Thai people

in situation like this and i will continue so if needed, the problem in today's society there are to many self centered people that couldn't give a <deleted> about their fellow human beings.
