Case of two year old boy scalded at Ranong restaurant ends happily

Daily News reported that a case of a two year old boy who was severely scalded by soup that fell on him at a Moo Katha (BBQ pork) restaurant caused a massive storm on social media. 

 

The boy was hospitalized with nasty injuries and initially the grandparents had not sought help from the owner of the restaurant.

 

It was claimed that subsequently they were offered a paltry 5,000 baht by the owner who threatened to countersue if they didn't accept his offer. He reportedly threatened them with getting nothing if they didn't accept. 

 

To make matters worse he reportedly said that he was too busy to sort it all out - he had to go and play golf with the governor of the province.

 

Not surprisingly this had Thai netizens in the mother of all lathers. 

 

Now it has led to the grandparents, Wichian and Wilaiporn Wandao and the restaurant owner Udom Panjasupharak, 59, appearing before Capt Narongsak of the Ranong police in the south of Thailand.

 

They discussed a fair compensation deal with the policeman mediating. 

 

This is often the custom in Thailand and keeps matters out of the courts, notes Thaivisa. 

 

They settled on 40,000 baht with Udom offering a wai in apology saying that it was an accident and the restaurant had no intention of hurting the child.

 

For his part granddad Wichian accepted the settlement and offered his own wai and apology for saying things he should not have.

Ended happily for everyone except the little girl .

That’s not happy at all. 
the child is scarred for life. 
 

 

I’ve lost count of the amount of times I’ve got annoyed at restaurant staff for attempting to serve hot food over my sons head.  
We try & seat him out of they way and as the staff approach, if they look as if they are about to serve over him we stop them. 
Yet, they return with the next dish & try the same.

 

I’ve had to raise my voice a few times (in the UK once too).

 

 

Safety, even the most basic concepts are so often completely ignored.

40000 Baht seems cheap - does this cover the hospital bill? And will there be permanent scars decreasing the childs quality of life

The sad part of this story is that it is was considered newsworthy (in the ThaiNews at least, which is where I assume ThaiVisa got its news and translated it for us) is not that a Child was scolded, but the manner in which the issue was handled.

 

When the Grandfather contacted the Restaurant owner, his response was dismissive and then ‘name drop’ to indicate he has powerful friends, then to threaten to countersue, then to suggest the claimant will get nothing if he doesn’t just accept 5000 baht. 

 

A perfect example of a ‘have’ using any form of power over a ‘have not’ and ultimately showing despicable moral character. 

 

Not once has it been suggested in any of the news reports on this story that Management and Owners must be responsible for training their staff not to handle hot food near children. 

 

 

 

Just because a Child is sat lower, it seems easiest path to place food on a table - yet children are unpredictable and holding scolding food above a child is madness - People are so outlandishly careless.

But how did the incident take place, grandparents allowing the child to run about near soup possibly as we all so often see or clear negligence on behalf of the owner?

Requiring businesses to have insurance would help too....
