Trump denies report that he spoke disparagingly of U.S. war dead

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Donald Trump strongly denied on Thursday a magazine report saying he had spoken disparagingly about fallen U.S. military personnel buried in Europe and declined to visit an American cemetery during a trip to France because he thought it unimportant.

"The Atlantic" reported that Trump, a Republican who is running for re-election and who has touted his record helping U.S. veterans, had referred to marines buried in an American cemetery near Paris as "losers" and declined to visit in 2018 because of concern that the rain that day would mess up his hair.

Trump told reporters on Thursday the story was false.

"To think that I would make statements negative to our military and fallen heroes when nobody has done what I've done," for the U.S. armed forces, Trump said. "It's a total lie ... It's a disgrace."

The president said he did not go to the cemetery because weather prevented a helicopter flight. The alternative, a long drive, would have meant going through very busy areas of Paris and the Secret Service objected, he said.

"The Secret Service told me, 'you can't do it.' I said, 'I have to do it. I want to be there.' They said, 'you can't do it,'" Trump said.

"The Atlantic" did not immediately respond to an emailed request for comment outside regular business hours.

Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden, who is leading Trump in national polls ahead of the Nov. 3 election, emphasized his own commitment to helping members of the military in a response to the report.

"If the revelations in today’s Atlantic article are true, then they are yet another marker of how deeply President Trump and I disagree about the role of the President of the United States," Biden said in a statement released by his campaign.

"And if I have the honor of serving as the next commander in chief, I will ensure that our American heroes know that I will have their back and honor their sacrifice — always."

As a presidential candidate, Trump made negative comments about now deceased Senator John McCain for having been captured during the Vietnam war.

“He was a war hero because he was captured. I like people who weren’t captured," Trump said in 2015 when he was running for the Republican presidential nomination.

Trump said on Thursday he disagreed with McCain but still respected him.

"I was never a fan. I will admit that openly," Trump said. "I disagreed with John McCain. But I still respected him."

There’s something to be said about “the Atlantic” being the one to publish this as well. It can easily be implied that CNN NYT MSNBC etc all got the same info but didn’t publish because it doesn’t meet editorial standards.

And lastly, anonymous sources, as per usual.

But par for the course. The election is 2 months away and they need to get the media off of Biden being constantly retarded.

His hair is much more important, to him, than some dead American Marines,

I would love it if some power, did what the US tried to do with Castro's beard,

have it all fall out

Trumps track record when caught, claim it is fake news and lie, works too. Amazing

Trump referred to the 1,800 Marines who died at the pivotal Battle of Belleau Wood as "suckers." The Associated Press later confirmed the report.

"Trump rejected the idea of the visit because he feared his hair would become disheveled in the rain, and because he did not believe it important to honor American war dead, according to four people with firsthand knowledge of the discussion that day".

First hand knowledge lol. After discarding the umbrella , he stands in the rain anyways!

Strange that it wasn't that long of a trip for others of his entourage.

White House chief of staff John Kelly and Gen. Joseph Dunford, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, made the roughly 50-mile long trip to the cemetery in a small motorcade of vehicles. The drive took about 90 minutes each way. Separately, French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Angela Merkel traveled a similar distance by car to a commemorative event in northern France.

Yep, usual group in full denial mode without any evidence whatsoever to back them, same with any criticism of trump, including fact checked content of his lies and misrepresentation. trump setting it up that if he loses 03/11 he will create enormous strife in the US - hopefully the guy will end up backing out gracefully, but doesn't look good.

Sounds like him so yes its believable. Sure it would be much better if the sources went on the record but when you consider what this toxic bully president does to those that do, its understandable.

On the contrary, Trump made at least several "nasty" comments referencing military service of rivals, more nasty comments on parents of a dead soldier etc., so why consider this report outlandish? It's quite in character, as far as Trump goes.

Your convulsed attempt to tar the Atlantic is pathetic. You've no idea if others got the same story, you've no idea about editorial considerations. You're just on the offense because something unfavorable to your idol was published, that's all there is to it.

Don't recall you having much issues with Trump spreading unverified stories, conspiracy theories and the like. Don't recall you having much issues with someone-told-me, many-people-say, I-heard-somewhere, and the rest of the covfefe the President often uses as cover for his nonsense.

  • Popular Post

These statements attributed are entirely consistent with comments Trump has previously made on the military service of a number of veterans and the bereaved parents of a dead soldier.

Not just his words but his failure to defend US troops in the face of Russia offering bounties for their murder.

Someone known to occasionally tell the truth makes a claim, someone else known to nearly always speak the truth makes a contradictory claim. Any rational person would distrust the lyer.

'it can easily be implied' is a fragment from your imagination.

The Atlantic report was verified by people who heard him.  I note you say they have denied it, but you make no mention of who, nor do you provide any link to a source.

At the ceremony he missed, it is interesting that the rest of his entourage were able to make it to the event.  It's interesting that Macron and Merkle were able to make it.   But suddenly nobody would fly him or drive him.   He is obviously lying.  Not even a good attempt.

Many of his remarks are well known.   His support among the upper military bass is low and many have openly said they will not support him.

Now, do provide us with a link to the denials.  A credible source would be appreciated.

excerpt from  your shared link above: " The president believes that nothing is worth doing without the promise of monetary payback, and that talented people who don’t pursue riches are “losers.” (According to eyewitnesses, after a White House briefing given by the then-chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Joe Dunford, Trump turned to aides and said, “That guy is smart. Why did he join the military?”)"

Even John Bolton isn't going along with this hilarious scam:

"He [Trump] got support from an unlikely source on Friday when John R. Bolton, his former national security adviser who has broken with him and called him unfit for office, said he was on the trip in question and never heard Mr. Trump make those remarks. “I didn’t hear that,” Mr. Bolton said in an interview. “I’m not saying he didn’t say them later in the day or another time but I was there for that discussion.”

”Both Elizabeth Neumann, a former assistant secretary of counterterrorism in the department of homeland security, and Miles Taylor, a former chief of staff in that department, said the account was true, asserting that Trump’s low opinion of soldiers killed and wounded in combat was well-known inside the administration.”
