(Reuters) - Protesters in Portland threw rocks and fire bombs at police who in turn made over 50 arrests and used tear gas on Saturday night on the 100th day of demonstrations in the Oregon city against racism and police brutality.

Police described what they called "tumultuous and violent conduct" by protesters on the city's Southeast Stark Street.

One of the fire bombs caught a community member on fire and he was taken to hospital, Portland police said in a statement, adding that a sergeant was also struck by a commercial-grade firework that injured his hand.

"Fire bombs were thrown at officers, injuring at least one community member", police said https://bit.ly/34lgHyK earlier on Twitter while re-tweeting a video posted by a New York Times reporter showing fire bombs being thrown and a protester running with his legs on fire.

Protesters in Portland threw rocks and fire bombs at police who in turn made over 50 arrests and used tear gas on Saturday night on the 100th day of demonstrations in the Oregon city against racism and police brutality. The same day saw civil unrest in Louisville, Kentucky and Rochester, New York, Freddie Joyner has more.

Police said officers used tear gas among other crowd control measures to disperse the gathering, which the Oregonian newspaper had estimated to be around 400.

Portland has seen nightly protests for over three months that have at times turned into violent clashes between demonstrators and officers, as well as between right- and left-wing groups.

Elsewhere on Saturday, armed police supporters and anti-racism demonstrators clashed in Louisville before the Kentucky Derby horse race, while Rochester police also used tear gas to disperse protesters.

Demonstrations erupted around the United States following the death in May of George Floyd, a Black man, after a Minneapolis police officer knelt on his neck for nearly nine minutes.

President Donald Trump signed a memo on Wednesday that threatens to cut federal funding to "lawless" cities, including Portland. His Democratic challenger in the Nov. 3 presidential election, Joe Biden, has accused Trump of stoking violence with his rhetoric.

This needs to stop #1 it’s wrong #2 it plays directly into trumps hands let’s change out administrations then we can address the underlying issues creating the unrest obviously it won’t get addressed under trump

Why were the problems there to start with?  Obama was president for 8 years.  Hmmm.  Maybe the problems aren't so severe when a DEM is in office.  LOL

Could you explain what trump has done to help quash the riots?

He got the  feds involved, Huge Step! ! Now some state troopers in ORE are deputized as federal agents !

"With state troopers now returning to assist Portland police in protest coverage, federal prosecutors can choose to pursue a charge of assault on a federal officer against anyone accused of attacking a state trooper during a protest".

"It will be the U.S. Attorney’s Office that will evaluate all arrests made by state police and local police for potential federal prosecution, according to federal prosecutors".

"This week, federal prosecutors also have started pursuing civil disorder charges against people accused of assaulting any police officer or firefighter during a riot or unlawful assembly".

Its a matter of time, baby steps before these and others , are locked away!!!!!

That isnt Trumps job .

That is the Polices job

Exactly, By deputizing state police to help federal agents .the thugs will potentially be held on federal charges which are much more severe and accountable!

I don't see what all the fuss is about. Just a group of protesters exercising their rights. If anyone is to blame it's Trump.

So why are trump supporters saying if biden gets in this is what it will be like, and trump will fix it.

Btw, trump does have the authority to fix it, he just refuses to do so.

Portland mayor arranged that with no input from trump. Actually a day after it was arranged trump had no idea it was done because he stupidly tweeted about it.

Bigger than a Biden rally, for sure.  Maybe Joe should pay a visit to Portland...

Good to see Joe following the advice of the professionals and not having large gatherings. Shows he cares for the community. Not so much for trump.

How many years did republicans block passage of Obama admin legislation? US society divisions are a lot more severe under trump due to his hyper partisan and ethnic divisive messaging. To compound matters, let's not forget trump refusing to take any responsibility for Covid-19 epidemic negative outcomes in the US.

I don't know.  How many years did DEMs have absolute control under Obama.  Hint - the Health Care initiative was passed without any help from the GOP so it was a bulletproof majority.  And BTW it is normal for the party not in power to deter the one in power from running the ship too far left or right.  I'm not complaining that DEMs prevent Trump from enacting anything he wants.

And as to divisions, it's funny how much they ramp up in an election year.  I keep hearing how divisive Trump is and racist yet don't see it.  I see media twisting everything he ever says.  I see that same media giving a pass to DEMs who say stupid stuff.  I see as much divisive rhetoric from DEM politicians as I do from Trump.  If you want balance in your opinion you need so spend as much time on Fox as you do CNN.  Both heavily biased.  CNN more so because Fox really doesn't like Trump either.

Last do you blame Trump for the arrival of Covid?  Did he do everything perfectly?  No.  But idiots on the left also promoted stupid stuff early on so let's stop the lame it's all Trumps fault meme.  Is it Cuomo's fault the deaths in NY?

Trump supporters are very good at pointing out what isn't Trump's job. What he's not responsible for. What's absolutely isn't his fault and what doesn't have anything to do with him. Apparently, this leaves trolling, golf and tweeting.

If Trump "fixes it", CNN and co will have the next 3 months blown up about how he doesn't respect state rights and is "lituhrally Hitler".

If you really think Trump should override states rights with executive orders, then you don't respect basic civics structure or understand the gravity of changing a president (who is by all intents and purposes a figurehead) into someone who has precedent for meddling in affairs.

Remember, it's the United STATES of America - not "what the head honcho says goes."

By that same logic, if states want to defund police, decriminalise vandalism and assaults, let people out on a rotating door of charge-free bail and refuse support from the federal level when "fiery but mostly peaceful protests" are occurring, then that's on the leaders of the state and up to the people to vote those morons out.

Just like I say about Thailand - the people get the government they deserve... don't like it? Vote differently.

I think even North Korea is smart enough to keep their violent criminals locked up rather than letting them back on the street minutes later.
