He could have done plenty of things at a federal level. By declaring emercency powers (permisable under a pandemic), he could have shut down states, ordered people to stay at home, made mask wearing compulsory and co-ordinated PPE purchases as a nation rather than individual states vying against each other and driving up prices. He could have forced companies to manufacture life saving equipment and he could have made sure the testing was correct, accurate and available to all (he didn't). Basically he could have contained the pandemic to accecptable levels.

Instead he did none of these things. What he did do was ignore, deny, deflect and blame everyone else other than himself. He's pushed tinpot 'cures' and denied science at every turn. He was more interested in the stock market than American lives and has demostrated callousness and a lack of empathy at every turn.

 

Perhaps he couldn't win either way. But there was certainly a more winning way than the one he chose.

He has chosen to demonstrate a selfish, foolish, reckless, deadly example. His followers will drink bleach if he tells them to. If he had listened to science (as ALL other countries successful in abating the virus have done) and encouraged people to wear masks, tens of thousands of US citizens wouldn't have died. This isn't debatable, only the number of dead will never be exact, but epidemiologists can get a reasonably accurate number.

 

He COULD have won if he'd acted as the people around him recommended. Enact the Defense Production Act to get businesses to create the necessary hardware to battle. NOT make it political - numerous times ridiculing people for wearing masks and social distance themselves. NOT act like a petty tyrant man-baby, pitting citizens against each other.

 

His lies, his lunacy, his legacy will be a blight in American history, and future students, when reading about this dark time, will understand how evil con men can rise to the highest positions of power and convince the gullible to deny truth and embrace fascism.
