Food deliveryman dies in freak accident during Bangkok morning rush hour

A Grab Food deliveryman died on Wednesday morning after falling off his bike and being run over by a bus. The incident happened during morning rush hour on Bangkok’s Phaholyothin Road.

 

Officers from Bang Khen Police Station arrived to find the body of Santi Robru, 49, lying at the mouth of Soi Phaholyothin 44 with multiple wounds and a cracked skull. His black Honda Click motorcycle and helmet were 5 metres from the body. The vehicle that ran him over was airconditioned bus No 26, which runs between Bang Khen and Victory Monument.

 

 

Bus driver Narongsak Inta, 44, reportedly told officials that he was heading to Victory Monument with a full load of passengers and driving at 60km per hour when a motorcycle in front tried to overtake a taxi at high speed.

 

“Suddenly the bike lost control and the rider fell in the middle of the road. I tried to apply the brake, but couldn’t stop the bus in time and the man was run over by the right rear wheel,” he said.

 

Police are reviewing CCTV footage and interviewing witnesses to determine cause of the accident. Nobody has been charged yet.

Poor man RIP, I wonder if he was wearing the helmet at the time he was unfortunately run over since his helmet was found next to the bike 5 meters away from his body.

Possible multiple wounds to limbs from being run over, and cracked skull from hitting the road.

Possibly, you just never know.  I have been witness to horrific accidents where the entire body has been broken and battered but because of a helmet, a full faced helmet and not the cheap ones they sell here that most people buy, they survived, albeit with years of recovery.  You just can not say that they would not have, I have a top rated full face black dot DOT rated helmet I wear, just in case.  As I said you never know.  In Law Enforcement we called helmets brain buckets because they at least kept the head and brain intact......you can guess the rest.

Yes mate, wearing a helmet certainly helps.

In my case it saved my life, body battered/broken, only part of me undamaged was my head, due to me wearing a helmet.

Strange thing the helmet was not an expensive full face helmet, it was the 1 given free by the Honda dealer.

You were lucky and unlucky at the same time. Such helmets do not help much, perhaps you had an angel flying next to you?

 

   I guess we'll never know.........I'll never forget an accident with a truck where a woman on a scooter got her whole skin and flesh of one leg removed.

With this accident - I suspect the helmet may have been propped on the guys head without the strap. Of those who do ride with a helmet, I see so many riding with a terrible plastic helmet and no one seems to do up their helmet. 

 

I ride with full gear (95% of the time, even in Bangkok), I have a Shoei Neotek 2 helmet - but I’m not sure how much good that would do if a bus ran over my head. 

 

The idea of course is not to get into an accident in the first place. Most of the accidents are caused by two people riding in a careless manner. Not all accidents can be avoided, but many can with sensible riding.

I see motorcyclists taking so many unnecessary chances on a daily basis - each and every day when driving I feel that my ‘avoidance’ helps other motorcyclists from getting injured - especially those who ‘come at you’ (towards you) when overstating traffic, if I didn’t hit the breaks I’d hit them !!! - real kamakaze riders. 

 

Just last week a girl pulled out of a side soi without looking, she simply did not look. I don’t know how I missed her (in my car). I was level with the side soi when she entered the road. 

A few days before that, a family of 3 (Mum Dad and Child) were riding down the pavement and suddenly swerved off the pavement into the road, coming towards me in the wrong direction of traffic. I had to suddenly swerve to avoid them. Completely irresponsible.

This isn't a "freak accident" but the kind of thing that happens frequently on the roads of Thailand, hence 20,000 fatalities a year.

All Bangkok  motorcycle riders are a total menace, regularly  hitting peoples  cars then just  running  away, their driving is extremely dangerous they need  reigning in.

If I’m popping down the Soi to 7-11, its just Full face helmet, gloves, Shorts, T-shirt Trainers. 

 

If I’m heading anywhere that involves a major road (i.e. Sukhumvit Rd, Petchaburi Rd, Rama 9 or Rama 4 rds) then I’ll use full kit (Kevlar Jeans or Rev’it riding pants, Rev’it Airwave Motorcycle Jacket, Casual riding boots, Full face helmet, gloves).

 

You never know when you are going to come off. I had a near miss yesterday, accelerated from a U-Turn, rear-end slipped out because the road was slippy (dry) and I was perhaps a little too throttle happy.

I saw a terrible accident where a girl on a scooter fell on her head, perhaps doing 30 km/h. Her skull was crushed/fractured and there's not much we could do other than waiting for an ambulance. 

 

    Everybody should wear a good helmet, but too many people can't afford it to buy one. 

 

  Security guards at schools check students if they wear one and it's okay if the rider of three on a bike wears one. Nobody would say a word to the teachers who fly in without a helmet. 

 

   There's something wrong and that starts at their education. 

 

   That's insane, because they should be idols for the students.

Punctured lung, broken ribs, broken hip/ pelvis /femur/ broken back/ severed spinal cord, torn diaphram, cuts and bruises all over my body, so you say i am exaggerating.

   I know some very good bike riders in Bangkok who go on the racing track pretty often to ride with high speed on very big bikes. They know how to ride.

You must be kidding! We're now talking about people who have to trust each other when doing speeds of over 250 km/h.

 

Don't you think that these guys are worse riders when they ride through Bangkok city? 

 

Were you ever riding on a track before? It would be best if you rode in a way, thinking that another rider might come off, and your reaction will be very sharp by doing so.
