Over 50 houses submerged after reservoir levee fails in Nakhon Ratchasima

 

 

More than 50 houses, in a small village in Pak Thong Chai district of Thailand’s northeastern province of Nakhon Ratchasima, are partially under water today after a wall of water cascaded downstream when a reservoir retaining wall collapsed.

 

After several days of heavy rain, the Hin Ta Ngo Reservoir, in Tambon Kam Nang Kaew, became so engorged that the earthen levee could no longer withstand the pressure of the excess water and burst, sending water rushing downhill to flood Village 3.

 

Officials said that the flood level in Village 3 reached about one metre at its peak, and the reservoir shed over 1.2 million cubic metres of water in about five hours.

Looks very substantial I don't understand why it failed?

Lack of maintenance possible.  Look at the undercut at the front of the levee, and the washout underneath.  Does not look like it was designed to hold more than a small stream back.

A video showed the dramatic moments as more than a million cubic meters of water burst through a collapsed weir and flooded dozens of homes in the northeast of Thailand. 

 

It happened at the Hin Tango reservoir in Pak Thong Chai district of Nakhon Ratchasima on Saturday. 

 

Sanook said that at least five sub districts - Lam Nang Kaew, Takhop, Sukkasem, Toom, Pla Thong - as well as Ban Ngiw were flooded.

 

The authorities were on the scene with a backhoe and sand bags making emergency repairs and offering assistance to devastated home owners. 

 

The reservoir contained 1,200,000 cubic meters of water, said the media.

This is awful. My wife lives about a mile away from Lam takhong dam. All the locals think it's going to burst and take out Sung Noen and the surrounding villages. Luckily she is on higher ground but a lot of people are gonna get flooded out.

 

 

very confusing reporting; was it a dam, levee or weir?

 

terrible for those affected, who, i would guess are poorer citizens, hopefully substantial financial assistance from the authorities will be forthcoming
