Covid-19 mutated gene could be more contagious than first as it accounts for 85% of cases globally

A mutated version of coronavirus which has swept the world may be even more infectious than the original, according to a study in the US. Scientists examined more than 5,000 patients at a hospital in Houston, Texas, and found that 99.9% of them had been infected by the altered strain, called D614G. The findings would appear to support the theory that the newer strain, which is believed to account for 85% of cases globally, is more infectious than the original one. D614G first appeared in Europe in February, before being spread worldwide in a matter of weeks by infected people travelling to the States, Asia and Oceania.
