Prayut shoots down bid to scrap military draft

An opposition party’s push for military reform has hit trouble after its draft law to abolish conscription was shot down before making it to Parliament.

 

The Bill on Military Service proposed by MPs of the now-defunct Future Forward Party failed to get the necessary endorsement from Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha, who is also a former Army chief.

 

The proposed legislation is considered “a money bill”, according to the Constitution, and thus requires the prime minister’s nod before it can be sent to the House of Representatives for debate.

 

A money bill refers to draft legislation dealing with changes to taxes or duties, payment of state funds, or any act binding state properties.

 

Future Forward’s successor the Kao Klai (Move Forward) Party is carrying forward the anti-conscription campaign, and has criticised General Prayut for “intervening in legislative work for his own political objectives”.

Well he would, wouldn't he!  There is absolutely no need for conscription in any country let alone Thailand!

Now hold on a minute, who will cut the grass at all of the generals houses and, those of their superiors who also live off base.  Who will wash their cars, clean the inside of the house, as well as take their laundry to the cleaners all while practicing for the day the big invasion or war looms with their neighbors.

With all these pro Democracy protests, now is hardly the time Prayut will considering scrapping his free bodyguards.

 

Not to mention, he has a lot of very expensive cars that need cleaning.

Surely the only money involved is that paid by families, including many poor ones that can't afford it, to enable their sons to avoid the draft!

Add, no conscripts would mean no soldiers to sign over their pay to the chief so that they can have total freedom but report back near the end of their time.

Saw where Thai steel is actually competitive to foreign steel, but they still levy 50% duty.  A move that removes any doubt from how Thailand unfairly shields its businesses from the outside world.

 

Have a Dusit Poll that asks who is more manly, Tsai Ing Wen of Taiwan, or the guy most educated youngsters hate in Thailand?    Taiwan, which faces a real military threat, has stopped forced military service.

The majority of conscripts are worse than useless fit only for cannon fodder.

I would suspect that without conscription there would be no one joining up....I can't imagine the pay is  much (excluding tea money).

The military leaders need conscription because no conscription equals a smaller budget and less "commission".

The real reason conscription is needed is because of the many changes the Army would have to make.  Also, they could not make them.

Tea money? You must be kidding....these kids don't get s**t....they even have to pay for their own freaking uniforms.

Let's see, Thailand has approximately 1,700 generals, so with a military of about 360,000 not including reserves, that's about one general per 200 other ranks in the Thai military.  Comparing that to a roughly equivalent sized western country, the UK. A quick Wiki check says about 150,000 with around 90 general ranked officers. So that's about 1,700 other ranks per general.

 

Either the UK needs to promote a heck of a lot more generals to close the general-gap, or maybe, possibly, just perhaps... the Thai military is a bit unbalanced? And that's why the Thai military need to conscript more people. To match the General to Other Rank ratio of a western country they need a military force of about 3,000,000. Which is about the same size as China's military. So, Yay Conscription!

The need for conscription is sorely needed when employment for hundreds of commanders is required.

Rotten, through and through........   Wasn't Army corruption in military housing the reason why the last soldier went on a shooting campaign ?

Well, I am hoping that they find Prayut has usurped more than power as he has stayed in the Military housing he had when he was the Military's chief.  Obviously he still uses conscripts to clean his free military housing and mow his lawn.  I hope they throw his ass to the wolves and he is forced out because of his unscrupulous nature.  What a pimple on the ass of humanity he is.  Ok rant over.  Besides conscripts he needs unskilled secretaries as well.

It’s not so easy these days to simply it to avoid the draft, a few years ago the cost was around 30,000 baht but since the military coup and the military rule ever since, the option to pay has been all but shut off. We have an ex army general in the family and even he had no say in our son being able to have the paid out option so our son has to do, as is the option for most who qualify, the ror dor (army cadets “ for 3 years to not have to go in to the army lottery.

They don't have the 6000 baht a month to pay them.

Bottom line  in Thailand is always  about money  for the Rich and powerful

The poor  are  just pawns  in a chess  game  for power

They will be used as long   as  the  wealthy  need  labor ... need  medial work  done ... and need  that corruption  to  sustain thier  lifestyle

Pity   the ones  who want them out  are shown to be nothing but violent  thugs

AH, not a problem for the illustrious one. He still lives on base. In a so called 'guest house'. He has access to as many soldiers to do his menial tasks as he needs.

There's the rub. Pay shed loads of conscripts peanuts, or have a professional Army, suited to the task and pay them properly.r

 

it is a money question. The bill will be the same or less. Problem is, what to do with all the kids who would have been conscripted. No jobs, no wanting to work on farms. Oh, maybe when CP takes over Tesco Lotus, they'll create a few more jobs. How about state agencies employing educated youngsters instead of re-employing retired civil servants? 

Oh, didn't the government order the creation of nearly a million jobs recently, through state agencies and ministries?
