Japanese Clothes Dryer, 100 Volt 50-60 Hertz 1300 Watt

Featured Replies

Actually, I don't know why no one has thought of the obvious, to install a 110v outlet instead of going through a transformer.

.....

As I understand it, power from the power plant comes into the residence on two 110 volt lines.

.....

The one issue brought up here that I have not considered is that of 60 Hz versus 50 Hz. I belive my US appliances are 60 Hz. What is the standard in Thailand?

As others have noted, the 220V here is not the same as in the US, you can't get 110/115V without a transformer, the 50/60Hz could also be an issue as suggested by lop.

It may be more cost effective to sell/ditch/store your US appliances and buy new when you arrive, 99% of what you are likely to need is readily available in 220V 50Hz. My house in Korea had dual voltage outlets (identical plugs too!) caused several expensive 'incidents' when I moved stuff around, best avoided if at all possible.

Things like laptops, digital cameras etc have universal power supplies, check the label for something like '100-240V 50/60Hz' these will work just fine here without any mucking about. Also your AV kit (TV, DVD, VCR) will use the NTSC colour system, Thailand uses PAL, so your TV etc. won't work here either unless it too is universal (check the handbook, a lot of LCD / Plasma TVs are). A positive note, PAL DVD players will happily play NTSC disks on a PAL TV, so your DVDs themselves will be ok :D

Be aware that the Thai 220V plug is very similar (identical) to the US plug (both 2 and 3 prong), this has been a source of smoke and tears for many tourists who omitted to check the outlet voltage against their appliance :o
