Biden says UK border with Ireland must be open

Featured Replies

  • Popular Post

I have, much to the amusement of Brexiteers, frequently cautioned that it is foolish for the U.K. to put itself in a position of weakness, desperately needing a trade deal from the US - and this statement from Biden is just part of the reason why.

The other reason will come after the U.K. follows Biden’s instruction wrt to Ireland and then get’s to learn the terms of a US/UK trade agreement.

Trump is history, but the power of US lobbying remains, the US Agricultural, Healthcare, Financial Services and Pharmaceutical sectors will dictate the terms of the eventual US/UK trade deal.

Enjoy.

Correct, however historically the POTUS has always expressed his opinion about foreign matters.

Yes you can after you listen to what other countries want from you that are more powerful you can choose who to obey. Sure you can disregard the US and others but that wont do your economy much good.

Lot of angry people if the economy of the UK is bad. Because no matter what you say in Maslovs pyramid money for food and shelter comes before freedom.

That is what politics are and better get used to it that the UK is now getting pushed and shoved around. So great to leave the EU only to be pushed by others. Its amazing that Brexiteers still don't see it. Probably they are like Trump supporters oblivious to facts.

How are we getting pushed around?

Biden is talking nonsense and like some crazy old Grandfather at Christmas, we are politely ignoring.

I shall not be indulging myself in any more of your baiting posts Rob.

I guess that's the difference between the British and the Dutch. We don't meekly obey people for a few % points of GDP.

What we did see and read on here not so long ago is how much the remainers hated the USA, so I will commend you all  very highly for suddenly becoming Americanphiles overnight, what a transformation that was, so well done you.

Nah, most people hated Donald Trump. I don't hate American's i hated Trump and his lies and falsehoods. But then again BJ did the same so Trump supporters and Brexiteers have something in common they dont mind being lied too.

2. Boris Johnson

As mayor of London, Boris told voters on 6 March 2016 ahead of the referendum:

Everybody is suddenly wrangling about the terrors of the world outside... Actually, there are plenty of people who now think the cost of getting out would be virtually nil and the cost of staying in would be very high.

Handing ex-chancellor George Osborne The Spectator's Parliamentarian of the Year award on 3 November 2016, a few months after the result, he sloganeered:

Brexit means Brexit and we’re going to make a titanic success of it.

Boris doubled-down on his optimism when he told the Commons on 11 July 2017:

There is no plan for no deal, because we’re going to get a great deal.

If by "America" you mean the Trump administration you may have a point. Otherwise, not so much.

You’ll have a hard time finding a single hint, let alone a clear statement from me of ‘hating the US’.

And I don’t recall any such ost from other ‘Remainers’.

Yes that is the difference us Dutch have always been traders and negotiators. That is how we got our empire yours was build more on force. (we did not have your resources of manpower so we used manipulation)

I have yet to see what is bad about the EU for the Dutch, we still get more out of it economically then what it cost us.

Sure we don't agree with everything but that is normal nobody ever gets all they want from their leaders.

I would say the Dutch are more pragmatic then those Brexiteers. A fake freedom (because your being pushed around anyway) or a better economy i know what i would choose.

Then your comment was nonsense. On what grounds do you allege the remainers had that they "hated the USA"?

Stop making things up.

The only response I've seen from Boris has been the political equivalent of "Yeah OK Joe, that's nice. Would you like another Digestive?".

Absolutely correct.  You don't have to do what Biden says and you don't have to have a trade deal with the US.

Amazing how many Leavers believed that Brexit means resurrecting the British Empire.

Did you expect anything else from him, he says one thing while the reality is totally different. Just look at the quotes i made of things he said. He does not have a good track record in telling the truth.

Who knows what he is thinking for real, these remarks are just for his supporters, but he knows he can't ignore the US.

It wont make him fold and agree to everything the EU wants but it certainly weakens his position. Not sure how you are still able to deny the facts.

I can remember people saying when we made comments to a Reuters article that Biden never said anything like this and that it was made up by reuters, and now confirmation of what Reuters said and still the Brexiteers are in denial.

If you are happy for The Netherlands to be subjugated to the EU that's fine. I wouldn't tell the Dutch how to run their country (or in this case, hand over power to Brussels to run it for them).

It's a shame you don't extend the same courtesy to the British.

I think that would be news to the Indonesians whose memories of Dutch rule are not all that fond.

So I repeat my question. How have we been pushed around? We haven't. He made a poorly judged comment and we ignored it.

The bigger issue is the Biden Administration spells an end to the dreams of the ‘Anglosphere’ (Empire2) upon Which so much of Brexit political thinking was based.

While Johnson is now left mimicking a US President who leaves office in January.

What a mess.

And the USA as an independent nation has every right not to pursue a free trade agreement with the UK on whatever grounds it chooses.

It's ironic that Britain's oppression of the Irish which created the Irish Diaspora during the Famine should at this late date produce such effect revenge as the Irish American block, which emphatically includes President-elect Biden, should be dictating the UK's internal borders.

But not to worry.  it won't be the UK for long.  Once the Celtic bits get trimmed off, it'll just be Little England.

Who knows? He may find one somewhere. But apart from anti-Trump comments, I don't recall any general statements criticizing the USA as such. Unless remarks about chlorinated chickens count.
