I'm not sure what procedure you're talking about?  In the UK, a proper TEFL qualification, like a CELTA or Trinity is the main requirement for TEFL/TESOL work.  Some employers might require a degree as well, but as most TEFL work is seasonal (pre-Covid) there is a high turnover with many teachers just working in summer schools, relevant qualifications and experience is far more important.

A proper TEFL qualification, like a CELTA or Trinity is the main requirement for TEFL/TESOL work. YEs, this is just fine. But, imagine a person who is ONLY qualified with that, without ANY other professional education teaching young children.

OK, a Degree might be irrelevant to teaching English, but children should be taught by intelligent teachers, rather than a fly-by-night holiday maker or a pleasure seeker.

Just my 2¢ . Maybe worth so much...

  • Hasn't this poor dead horse been beaten enough?   You get what you pay for. Pay a competitive salary and you'll get quality teachers. I know a school where they are currently short 14 teache

TEFL should be separate from the general curricula classes, which, I agree should be taught be teachers with teaching qualifications. In many schools, the EFL classes are separate and, in my opinion, should be taught by EFL specialists.    Most decent TEFL courses like CELTA or Trinity require a specified level of education before you can enrol on the course.

I think we both agree that fly-by-night holiday makers are not suited to teaching careers.

If you travel around the globe in non English speaking countries, you will hear similar or worse.

Can ALL Germans, French, Swedish, Norwegians etc speak 100% correct English with perfect pronunciation?

Yes you are correct. And that is what I have observed over the last 50 years of travelling around the world.
