Covid-19 from Tachilek found in 7 Thai provinces

Covid-19 cases from Myanmar’s Tachilek city have been found in seven Thai provinces, the Department of Disease Control (DDC) reported on Wednesday.

 

The first case was discovered on November 28, said DDC director general Opas Karnkawinpong, after Thais working in Tachilek began sneaking back over the border into Chiang Rai to escape a serious outbreak in Myanmar.

 

However, since December 6 new infections from Tachilek have been contained in Chiang Rai province, he added.

 

Tachilek-related confirmed cases now totalled 46, including two local infections.

 

More than 5,100 contacts of infected returnees have been tested in Chiang Rai, but only one was found to be infected.

 

Meanwhile, 55 close contacts of a Sing Buri woman who caught Covid-19 while taking the same flight as Tachilek returnees have all tested negative, according to Dr Sophon Iamsirithaworn, director of the Communicable Diseases Division.

 

Security camera footage from Chiang Rai airport shows the woman, 51, sitting close to two illegal returnees who are not wearing their masks correctly.

 

Elsewhere, five health workers in alternative state quarantine (ASQ) contracted Covid-19 after one of them took the temperature of a family of three in ASQ on November 24-27, said Sophon. The family was later found to be infected. The health workers eat together after work and share the same room. Their close contacts have been traced and tested. Among them are 226 workers at a private hospital (224 have tested negative while two are waiting for results), 6 co-workers (all negative), 7 at a government hospital (all negative), 14 in the first ASQ (negative), 20 in the second ASQ (negative), and 7 family members (negative).

What horribly bad fact reporting.  The headline says....

Seven?  Then why does article only mentions one province by name?

 

I suppose the the woman from Sing Buri province is actually now in Sing Buri province (though the article doesn't actually say that clearly).  The article also does not mention which province the 5 health care workers are in, but as they eat lunch together one would guess they are not in 5 separate provinces.  

 

So at best the article gives us only:

• 1 clearly stated province
• 1 ambiguously stated province
• 1 unknown province

 

With basic math, that's 3 provinces not 7.

 

Even with the fuzziest of math, it's no more than 4 or 5 provinces max!

 

Ugh.

It's going to be in a heck of a lot more than seven provinces after the coming long holiday weekend. This is so typically Thai, they do a great job and then get bored and want to do other things, and the end result is a whole mess.

They clearly write "elsewhere". But I can imagine that no province would be happy if there are Covid cases. There are a lot of activities planned for the coming days where they expect many tourists. Covid cases at such locations might not be good.

We live in rural Kamphaeng Phet which is the next province down from Tak (Mae Sot is in Tak province). My wife told me a ouple of days ago thaqt there is one case in Kamphaeng Phet but she wasn't sure if it was in the city or in the province.

This does bring up numerous questions, the answers to which, as is often the case, are not to be found in the news story.

It always seemed inevitable that Covid would find its way back in sooner or later, and if found in 7 provinces, you would have to say it is here and likely spreading.

If so, can we be lucky and see it stamped out again, or is it going to run amok this time?

Life would be simpler for TAT if we had it the same as everyone else. The 14 day quarantine could go for starters, and chances are beaches would flood with folks happier to catch it and die here, than freezing their tits off back home.

Given this government is not renowned for its complete honesty and forthrightness, any spread is more likely to be covered up than addressed.

very few in my locality wear masks except in Tesco or Big C and mostly incorrectly, outside of shops 75% of those that do wear them they are on their chins or just covering their mouths, some only have the masks hanging from 1 ear.

The official Department of Disease Control pages (Covid-19 Infected Situation Reports (Thailand) (moph.go.th)) shows 3 only in Phetchabun fully recovered and none since March.

My friend maintains that his hospital senior doctor friend has told him that there are 24 held in Phetchabun hospital undergoing COVID treatment.

What am I supposed to believe? One or the other must be false, or maybe both, I am not in any way attempting to spread fake news but would like to know the truth as it never hurts unless you have lied.

We will never hear the truth under current circumstances. The answer to your question is political. Daily, we hear fake news from from people who know what is going on.

How did it not spread the first round? Since when does a contagious virus enter a region and just fizzle out? Thailand should have been ground zero with active flights coming in from China while the initial spread was first being reporting.

 

Is Thailand using the PCR tests now? I like most of us just learned about these and how cycles at >40 can detect virus fragments so small they aren't even infectious. I'm very curious if Thailand would start mass administering them to the public would they find cases?

agreed if they told the truth and it was higher than they are currently admitting to, they might lose the 7 million tourists that are coming next year at a rate of 20k a month (doesn't compute) 12 times 20 does not equal 7 million.

Sure like to know what percentage of false positives and positive negatives are built into this system. I would have thought at least 25-50 would have come out positive just due to test error

Just read this is a different strain than the one from Wuhan.  It spreads 20% faster.  Ugh.

I guess you have no other news sources than tv forum and the Nation. Then you guess, make up a conspiracy theory and then other people who also only read the Nation and Thaivisa forum and then believe it, then it somehow becomes fact and the ranting and raving commences.

You could always ask a Thai.

Yes, from the onset of the news out of Wuhan they were on to it, being the first country to test for covid outside of China in January while other countries were dithering.
 

By February most Thais were masking up while other countries were declaring they were not necessary and PPE had been distributed to the over 10,000 hospitals in Thailand.

 

By March they had road blocks temperature testing and then testing those with high temperatures immediately. Similar to get into shops, plazas and airports.

 

Late March they implemented a state of emergency and locked down with curfews and alcohol bans.

 

By April it was largely controlled in Thailand and in May they had developed the Thaichana app. 
 

It is December and they are still temperature testing to enter supermarkets etc and still most Thais are masking up.
 

The last two days the Thais have really clamped down again after this cluster was imported by stupid and selfish hookers. Thankfully they have mobilized again quickly and set up emergency Covid facilities to handle any outbreak.

Nearly half the countries in the world deaths are in the thousands, tens of thousands or hundreds of thousands deaths with bodies piling up.

The Thais are not even in triple figures.
 

Yesterday the USA had the most deaths ever with over 3,000 dying. Worldwide over 12,000, it is getting worse, not better. If only they had followed Thailand’s example, it would have saved over a million lives.

A cheap mask is not the answer but a great vaccine is! Why in hell do we have to wait until may to get one? Many counties around the world are getting the vaccine with in a month or two. And they have a choice of vaccines.

Compare mask observance in the USA vs mask wearing in Thailand, there's your answer.

The "great vaccines" require storage and transport at -70 degrees C, that's why many countries are unable to receive them.

Most in the countries getting the jabs now will have to wait until at least May.  Only elderly and front line responders are getting jabs now.

 

I did a check for my state and I'm in line for some time in May/June.
