Thanakorn Wangboonkongchana

People are very grateful to the government for approving a second phase of the “Khon La Khrueng” (Let’s Go Halves) subsidised-shopping scheme on Tuesday, PM’s Office Minister Thanakorn Wangboonkongchana said on Friday.

He added that many people had benefited from this scheme, which was introduced to boost spending.

The scheme will be expanded to cover 15 million Thais from the original 10 million.

Until March 31, the government will pay 50 per cent of a participant’s bill for food, drink and general goods up to Bt150 per day. The cap on the total subsidy per person over the whole period has been raised from Bt,3000 to Bt3,500.

The total budget for both phases of the scheme is Bt22.5 billion, aiming to generate spending of Bt45 billion.

Each phase is designed to boost GDP by 0.32 per cent by injecting up to Bt105 billion into the economy.

In response to Pheu Thai MP Karoon Hosakul’s criticism that the scheme is allowing vendors to take advantage of consumers, Thanakorn said the Finance Ministry is keeping a close eye on retailers and will take legal action against those caught taking advantage.

“PM’s Office Minister Anucha Nakasai has instructed the Consumer Protection Board to act on people's complaints as soon as possible," he said.

Whenever I read these NNT news reports they always seem like SNL sketch scripts to me. The wording, the set-up, the almost tongue-in-cheek tone, the consistent OTT praise for everything this government does... so hilarious.

Nah. Second class citizens don't count. Probably don't wash either.

Should give them cred for this one. Saves quiet a lot of money for the people and also increase the business for the restaurants.

My GF loves the app,  and I must admit I am a fan too since I am the one paying

Seems to be working pretty good a couple of restaurants that I know are doing good so everybody benefits where they didn't have to lay off any staff,

Government subsidies and hand-outs - the government pays the 50% directly to the provider - are wonderful, especially if people in need are benfiting. I'm not sure how many needy people are using the app? Keeping people employed was probably not the initial intent of this program.

Additional caps:

it is available to ALL citizens.

A very good way for the government to stimulate the tourist part of the economy that has been the most hard hit.

The up market hotel near my house has been fully booked for the last five weekends, which has brought jobs back and the nearby bars, coffee shops, restaurants etc have also benefitted. Probably not making a profit with only weekend trade, but better than nothing and keeps them afloat.

Compare that to western stimulus where they just pay people to stay at home and not go to work wasting billions of dollars that must be paid back by the the taxpayer with interest which will take decades to pay back.

Idiotic.

Very different. Western countries with high infection rates don't want people travelling.

Yes.... My Thai wife is in Thailand and got here share of this.... BUT, don't you know TIT (This is Thailand) and a local merchant who doesn't have much stock has offered her half in cash, without purchase, and he keeps a 30% fee..... Can't stop the cheaters in Thailand... It is 'in-breed through the past centuries.... LOL (funny but factual)

I doubt I am the only one avoiding any place with the 50-50 logo.  Saw a mango cart with it the other day..40 THB per serving...oddly, I have been paying 20, or even 15, for years.  Scam, that excludes foreigners and misrepresents its value to freebie loving Thais.  Had a decent room on soi 67 , HH, 1299 for three nights..total..I wonder how much more it would have cost with the 40% off promo?
