So the insurance for our Ford Everest is due for renewal next month. The car was bought in 2015, but due to a paperwork problem Bangkok Insurance re-issued the insurance in January 2016. It has only covered 39,000kms and we have never made a claim.

The agent has just sent us the renewal offer. The price is less than last year, but there have been some changes.

1…we can no longer insist that any repairs are carried out by Ford Repair Shops.

2…the payout for personal injury, (what is in the 3rd column)  has been halved eg where it was 200,000thb it is now only 100,000thb and where it was 500,000thb it is now only 250,000thb

3…they have removed the 2000thb excess that I had to pay if in an accident

MrsJ queried whether we could continue with Class 1 insurance after seven years and the agent confirmed that we could provided we continued insuring with them. She also confirmed that (1) and (2) are standard in Thailand after a car is five years old..

They also reduced their valuation payout from 840,000 to 750,000, it is a 3.2Ltr Titanium. Our ages are 75/65.

So am asking if anyone can confirm what we have been told.

Shopping around can save a couple of thousand baht.

I don't know if sticking with a Ford repair shop is necessary. They may well farm stuff out such as panel beating and spray painting to a non-Ford shop. Yes, I have a skeptical mind.

I have my Vios serviced by an independent mechanic in Chiang Rai. IMO he does just as good a job as any Toyota service centre, and IMO a damn sight cheaper.

Normally it is your choice to specify with many insurance cos. Their should be a saving between having it repaired at the main dealer or "other" shop with the other shop option being cheaper.

Seems to me like an almost new policy and unusual to take off an excess if you did not ask for it to be removed - but they (not you) have made potential savings with the significant reductions elsewhere.

I would do as others have suggested and contact a broker to get some alternative quotes. Doesn't do any harm

I also doubt it is "normal" practice after 5 years.....

Are you dealing direct or via a broker?

I don't think its a case of it being something you needed to insist on versus an option that they have decided to remove? I am sure if you opted to go with dealer repair, it would be allowed but the quoted premium would go up.

My experience of 'dealer repair' with my Ford Ranger resulted in my selecting 'any garage' and thus saving money on my subsequent renewal as the garage that Ford used did BOTH kinds of insured repair work and my experience didn't indicate I got a better quality repair.

My Personal Accident has been 100,000/100,000 baht per driver/passenger for 3 years with Roojai and the 3 years with AXA before that.

However, the coverage in column 1 'Third party Liability' is 2,000,000 baht/person, 10,000,000 baht per accident for bodily injury/death and 5,000.000 baht third party property.

Removing the excess is strange as well. I have kept mine at the 'standard' 5000 baht with both AXA and Roojai.

As suggested, give roojai online quote a try as there are drop down menus and you can select what you want and then compare.

tks...

I now see that the Third Party Liability has also been halved down to 1,000,000baht/person the other stays at  10,000,000 baht per accident for bodily injury/death and 5,000.000 baht third party property.

Apparently it is through a broker, same one that we have used for the last four years. We also have the other car through them and the 1st years renewal was hugely cheaper than the quote from Viriyah who insured the car for the first year.

I could try and ask the questions direct with Bangkok Insurance, but MrsJ tells me it's normal now to use a broker.

I was hoping that someone on year six insurance could tell me if they had the same problem.

I read that Roojai only quote for age up to 70years.

Can you not ask your broker for some competitive quotes from other companies?

As others suggest I would try Roojai online (you will soon see if they will quote and just don't put your phone number in) or ask AA Insure or another broker - at least you will have some other baselines to compare. if you don not end up using it is not an issue.

I had a quick look yesterday but could not see the same changes when I renewed - I am now on year 9.....

There were some changes in the law on payouts for car insurance companies this year and your company may have taken the opportunity to reflect those. In my case it meant the premium did not decrease as expected.

However the numbers for cover you mention do not seem low overall.

I am not sure who the OP's broker is but before Roojai's DIY option and 50% lower premiums caused me to switch, I had many years great service from AA Insurance brokers. Each year would give me 3 and sometimes 4 quotes from different companies for me to select. I went with AXA. If the OP's broker is doing the cherry-picking for him and only offering the single option, maybe that's their business model or maybe it's harder to get easily comparable quotes due to the age of the named drivers?

No harm in trying the other options.

Thanks for the input guys.

I have had a quote from Roojai, it is somewhat cheaper and the sums insured are better. So it looks like I will be changing.

What did interest me was that there was the option to increase the Third Party Liability for Property Damage to 5,000,000thb.  This is one thing that has always bothered me here in Thailand. In the UK Comprehensive is Comprehensive and there is no limit. But here it is limited. In the case where you hit something very expensive and get the blame, as I understand it, you are liable for anything above the Third Party Insurance Limit.  We all know that car cams can fail and witnesses can magically appear!

They also offered Roadside Assistance for quite a small sum. TBH , at my age I don’t want to be stuck somewhere and have to try and organize it myself.

The Sum Insured was much higher but I suspect that it will reduce after the New Year.

Repair at Any Garage. Something that I hadn’t considered but my wife mentioned, if you have engine damage etc do you really want some ‘paint sprayer’ fixing it….you get my gist!

I did ask for a call back, and it came the next day. I passed it over to my wife who is actually quite good at sorting out things like this. She had a long talk with Ms Roojai who also she said the policy would be with Bangkok Insurance anyway!

So we ended up saying we will phone her back after Christmas.
