I have my Acer laptop connected to a monitor, it is running very slow at times and I cannot log on to my UK bank account, the wee circle at the top left hand corner just seems to keep turning especially on Thaivisa and when trying to log in to UK newspapers. On the plus side, I never have any bother with movies which are stored in my external hard drive.

Anyone know why this is?

Are you using WiFi or a direct (wire) connection to internet box?  Should be much better with a direct connection in most cases.

Will your bank allow foreign IP to log on?  Will the newspapers allow?

As for ThaiVisa this is often reported here and expect much has to do with the huge number of websites that must be called up for all the advertising (rather than just being on actual page you are requesting).

Could be 2 problems. To many tasks running or slow internet. Check in the task manager how much CPU is used. If too much check which task is the problem. Also check the internet speed with a speed test. But also your bank server could have problems if other sites load normally.

It could be a lot more than 2 problems.

And some of those problems go away just by waiting a couple of hours (while the computer is on).

Obviously there are also many other problems which don't go away.

Using wifi, but I also have another laptop using wifi in the same room and it is fine.

Logging on to my UK bank is no problem, when I am halfway through my logging on, a notice comes up telling me I cannot.

The newpapers allow me to log on, but it can be very slow, and the wee circle at the top left hand corner just keeps turning.

Nothing to do with the monitor, too much <deleted> installed on your laptop ?,

use something like Ccleaner to remove ,

regards Worgeordie

Yes I know it is nothing to do with the monitor, and I use Ccleaner regularly, I do notice that the same two apps qbittorrent and the browser Opera stay on when I shut the computer down asking me to go back and save my work, I just wait a few seconds and it goes off and the computer shuts down as normal.

Regards. Possum.

Yes, as I said there is two running when I close down, and I am asked to go and save my work, but that is not necessary as there is never anything to save. I'm afraid I am not computer literate enough to know what to do with the task manager and CPU.

There is no problem logging on to my bank account with my other laptop, nor is the speed too slow on it.

Sounds like malware.

Porn sites can often cause that.

Not malware, I have run a check on it.

You are aware that Opera browser has been Chinese owned for the last 4 years?  Yes I know most things are Chinese these days but suspect there is a chance your bank may be blocking as there is some concern it contains spyware.

Are you using same browser in your other computer?

How often do you use that notebook?

I have an old ThinkPad which I use maybe once a month, maybe less often.

Whenever I want to use it I make sure to open it a day before and let Microsoft and other companies updating their software. That often takes hours and several restarts and 100% CPU usage. At that time the notebook is basically not usable.

But the next day, after all the updates are done, it's a nice and fast enough notebook again.

This concepts applies to all Windows PCs, not just notebooks.

I use it every day most of the days when I am home, it is also turned off every night. I wonder if a system upgrade is required.

If it works everyday then you don't have the problem which I described above.

It the notebook works for watching movies it should likely also work for the bank.

Maybe try different browsers like firefox, chrome, etc. You can download them for free.

Some websites work better on some of the browsers.

I only use Opera when I am downloading movies from the likes of Pirate Bay and Torrent Galaxy as I get a free VPN. The bank is not blocking me as I can log on to it on my other laptop. My main Browser is Brave.

OK I will try chrome, but Firefox used to be good, don't like it anymore. Thanks.

Running which operating system? Windows?  There is your problem.  If you're running Linux that you have different issues.

Neither have anything to do with you monitor.

I am running Windows, and I always knew it was not the monitor.

Amazing.....but totally impractical and really not the best advice. No one should have to wait hours once a month for their device to update. That is just ridiculous in the 21st century. It cannot be that old that you cannot fit an inexpensive solid state drive.

My nearly fourteen year old laptop has one fitted and I don't even notice that updates are taking place when in use, other than the notifications.

As long as you're aware that the Opera VPN only "protects" traffic going through the Opera browser.  For example, you can stream a movie through it and your IP address will be hidden.  However, it doesn't protect any other services that are directly accessing the internet, such as utorrent.  So, though you can "safely" download the *.torrent file through Opera, once you come to running utorrent, or any other torrent client, your IP address is not hidden.  A paid VPN is your best bet.

"Now, is Opera VPN safe to use for torrenting? The simple answer is no, it isn’t safe to use OperaVPN for torrenting. OperaVPN hides your IP address temporarily when you access the torrent website.

However, if you want to download a movie, tv series, or any content file, the downloading process uses a different file-sharing program installed on your computer. When that happens, the traffic is split, with one going to the torrent app unprotected. Failing to cancel the download will compromise your identity, which will probably show on the torrent website and eventually lead to copyright owners."
