Thai PM assures no national lockdown despite a surge in COVID-19 cases

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha has reassured that the Thai government will not resort to a lockdown of the entire country in the wake of the surge in COVID-19 infections, noting that provincial governors are authorized to make decisions about necessary measures in their provinces to stem the spread of the contagion.

He also urged members of the public to write to him if they have information about illegal gambling dens in their localities, so that he can take action to deal with the problem.

Most of the COVID-19 cases in the eastern province of Rayong are related to illegal gambling activities. The prime minister was in Chon Buri province today to offer moral support to health officials and volunteers working at state quarantine and alternative state quarantine facilities.

He still doesn't understand his own people does he.  He expects the independent provinces to control the masses without a government mandating strict control itself.  He has definitely lost the plot. I don't want lockdowns either but what choice is there when all travel is still allowed and assisting the virus to spread.  No win situation i guess.

Who else could he blame when it all goes wrong

perhaps the PM has not been told about the new deadly strain spreading the country, if I had not read it here I would not know also, by the way gambling dens are not new they have been operating long before the virus came along, got to be careful what you say now that the scientists have taken over, they  have  warned not to call this thing the flue any more, am I glad that none of my relations or friends have caught it so far

As local governors seem oblivious as to what goes on and police take an incentive to look the other way !

Exactly while individual provincial governors can do what is necessary only the government can stop inter provincial travel... he encourages "lets go halves" and share the love?

"Dear Mr Prime  Minister, all  your  police farces  are  corrupt  and have gambling  going  on in their  provinces, I await  your swift  removal of these"

They might have to build a bigger "inactive building" to house them all.

This sounds slightly less healthy than contracting COVID-19.

Honestly, everyone knows where the local casino is. Inspector Clouseau could find them.

On one hand it makes sense to lock travel in and out of provinces that are either safe or dangerous, to keep infections from spreading, rather than slamming this over entire country. That said, by mid-January, there won't be any green provinces anymore, thanks to mass migrations happening right now, and closing provinces won't make any sense anyway. At that time, I'm quite confident, movements will get dramatically restricted all over the country, and lockdowns, likely curfews introduced as well.

Oh! come on - what this guy is saying is that his policing infrastructure is not fit for purpose. Whatever happened to agressive law enforcement. Seems that he is saying that he relies on informants, and not his own police officers who are probably running these operations or accepting brown envelopes from them.

What a damning statement"write to him"
