Brexit is Britain punishing itself, France's Beaune says

PARIS (Reuters) - Long and tortuous Brexit negotiations were not the result of any European Union desire to punish Britain for leaving the bloc, French European Affairs minister Clement Beaune said on Thursday.

 

The United Kingdom formally left the EU on Jan. 31, to implement the result of a 2016 referendum, but its bid to retain tariff-free access to the EU single market beyond 2020 only ended a week ago with the conclusion of a trade deal.

 

"With Brexit, Britain is punishing itself," Beaune told France's LCI television. "We weren't trying to punish it."

 

"Britain realised that having no access to the European market would be an economic disaster," he added. "This is why, in the deal that was reached, there is access to the European market, but while respecting our conditions and rules."

 

The UK officially leaves the European Union's orbit on Thursday night, after an often strained 48-year liaison with the European project.

 

"This day will be historic but it will be a sad day because, when a country leaves the EU for the first time after 45 years of living together, it is sad," Beaune said.

 

"Brexit must be a lesson that we must push forward better, faster and stronger as Europeans."

I think of it like this. Would the USA agree to being in an American union where they got one vote and free movement from other American countries ? Would Australia , Russia or even China agree to it in their regions ? 

 

Whole EU union conglomerate thing was just madness - and whilst it may have been a good idea in the first place, it just went totally rotten in the end.

All EU countries can have a vote if they want. Same as the UK did. In fact, they don’t even need to vote. They could just decide to leave if they wanted to.

Here's my sad bet...

 

Some financial institutions have sold $$$ trillions of derivative products that will go toxic under Brexit, and take down the British economy just like sub-prime mortgages in 2008 America.  Insurance companies happily wrote policies guaranteeing those soon-to-be toxic assets in amounts they can never hope to cover.  All up and down, the Banksters have made their profits and their obscene bonuses, foisting all the risk onto the public coffers. 

 

It's going to be something nobody predicted, out of left field.  Deja Vu, all over again.

Usual brexiter reply: "the EU is about to fall apart". The evidence is all to the contrary. The usual failure to explain why brexit is good for us when all the evidence is, once again, to the contrary. That's a good idea, giving now the E.U. people the opportunity to express their opinion about the E.U..

 

Except some minority groups, there is no really an E.U. antipathy,  more a disinterest,  but a referendum would makes the things clear.

 

Also in the U.K., say something like in 5 years, a new referendum to know what the people think about Brexit.

You do realize that the United States is 50 separate states  with their own governments and laws which also must obey the laws of the federal government  and each state gets a certain amount of votes in the Congress right? Started as 13 separate colonies with their own governments, laws, money etc. and bound together as one for two and a half centuries.

They guy is right. The rest of the world has been listening to the whining of the pro Brexit supporters for years complaining about how mean the EU was being to them when the onus was on the the UK whose decision it was to leave. You've left now with what looks like a good deal so no more whining please.

Whatever, it's happened and the man in the street will be paying taxes for it for decades. Can't see the UK recovering economically for at least five more years, and that's only if the Tories gets rid of Johnson and his useless ministers in 2021.  As for NI, Wales, and Scotland, who cares...

The ‘Remainer’ I do speak for is observing the growing gap being revealed between Brexit promises and Brexit reality,  and too the evident chagrin of ‘Brexiteers’ who would have us believe they’ve got what they wanted.

I am not concerned, we have done what we voted for, and the EU capitulated at the last hour...Yes it is a little disappointing that our fishing rights will take longer to enforce, but we have it, Brexit has it...

I didn't vote to leave & I don't think we've done the smartest thing by leaving, but we've left & I do believe the UK will get through this & continue to be in the top 10 nations of the world
