The Thailand Meteorological Department said on Saturday that the strong high-pressure area from China covers upper Thailand, resulting in cool to cold weather and strong winds.

Temperature is expected to fall by 2-6 degrees Celsius. Mountaintops are cold to very cold with frost in some areas.

Meanwhile, a strong northeast monsoon prevails over the Gulf and the South, triggering strong wind waves in the Gulf up to 2-4 metres high. People on the east coast of the South should beware of waves breaking on the shore. All ships should proceed with caution and small boats should keep ashore until January 13, the department said.

The weather forecast for the next 24 hours:

North: Cold weather; minimum temperature 16-19°C, maximum 26-28°C; temperature on hilltops is likely to drop to 5-14°C with frost in some areas.

Northeast: Cold weather with strong winds; minimum temperature 8-15°C, maximum 23-26°C; temperature on hilltops is likely to drop to 7-13°C.

Central: Cool weather with strong winds; minimum temperature 17-20°C, maximum 27-29°C.

East: Cool weather with strong winds; minimum temperature 18-23°C, maximum 27-33°C; waves 1-2 metres high and two metres offshore.

South (east coast): Partly cloudy with thundershowers in 30 per cent of the areas; minimum temperature 21-25°C, maximum 27-30°C; waves 2-4 metres high and over four metres during thundershowers.

South (west coast): Partly cloudy with thundershowers in 10 per cent of the areas; minimum temperature 22-25°C, maximum 30-32°C; waves 1-2 metres high and two metres offshore.

Bangkok and surrounding areas: Cool weather with strong winds; minimum temperature 18-22°C, maximum 27-29°C.

Something that puzzles me about temperature. Okay, of course we get acclimatised to the heat, but why do we feel the cold so much? It falls to 23 like today, but I feel the same as if I was in the UK and it was at least 10 degrees lower. Night-time, and 10 degrees feels positively icy.

It was only when I had to go out early one morning and it was 8 degrees that I realised the car had no heater ????

A friend of mine has only ever used an electric blanket when she was based in Cyprus and the temperature 'dropped' to 20 degrees.
