Govt urged to impose restrictions on people's movement in Covid-19-hit provinces

Chulalongkorn University professor of medicine Dr Thira Woratanarat

Chulalongkorn University professor of medicine Dr Thira Woratanarat has suggested that the government impose restrictions on people moving around within the province as well as inter-provincial travel where new Covid-19 cases have been found.

His comment comes as Thailand reports another day of more than 100 cases in the second wave of Covid-19, starting in December.

In a Facebook post on Sunday, Thira said that the Thai government should tell people to stay home and lockdown should be from two to four weeks.

The government's response to the second round of the outbreak has demonstrated a lack of unity, he said, referring to authorities changing restriction measures.

“When the government keeps changing the restriction measures or makes a u-turn on decisions, it does not boost confidence among people,’’ he said.

The government should not see the task of combating the virus as a budget burden, and the government should not issue threats about not taking care of those illegally entering the country or those who engage in illegal gambling, he said.

Such threats could lead to the virus spreading more, as the infected people may go underground, he warned.

The government needs to help everyone not only on humanitarian basis but also to contain the infections.

Everyone must wear face mask, he added.

Cumulative cases worldwide rose to almost 90 million on Sunday and the number of total deaths rose to 1.9 million.

Among Asean countries, Myanmar reported 566 new cases on Saturday, with 14 new fatalities. Cumulative cases in Myanmar reached 130,049 and the death toll rose to 2,826, or 2.2 per cent fatality rate.

We did say this ( us TVF members) a long long time ago, shame that the esteemed professor didn't do the same, only now that the horse has bolted does he speak up.

They'd have nobody to blame if they stopped blaming them.

Although nearly everyone will agree with this "expert", this government does not take criticism lightly on any matter, and he might have been better telling them discreetly, rather than doing it on social media, for his own good.

It is a start that someone else has now seen and mentioned what most if us here have been saying should occurr.  I would hope that everywhere would do the same. Then this could all be a distant memory, well in theory at least.

Google his name. This Nation report is old news. Even the English language The Tiger reported it six days ago.

Doc first called for another lockdown in December.

And it was his nagging that got Thailand locked down in March. Prayut was resisting at the time.

He talks a lot of sense.

Clever bloke.

Most of us don’t agree with lockdowns only the paranoid vocal few here who don’t want to take responsibility for their own health and want a nanny state to do it for them. A less than 1% death rate which is primarily among the very old and those already sick from other illnesses is no more scary than the annual flu outbreaks and much less fatal than the roads here or the air pollution.

Does the Professor have any knowledge or experience on how to herd Cats.

Thats what is needed to control these people, as has been proven over their complete disregard for the Safety and well being of others.

And you and other posters who want it to be the perfect world that it is in your minds only and yet don't want to know the truth.  Good on you. Attitudes like yours are amongst many in the world and why this issue of Covid has not been contained as you only want whats best for yourself and want to ensure your freedoms are not impinge upon.  Enjoy yourself and stay safe as this virus spreads out because movement is not curtailed.  This virus does not attack only the old and infirm as you insist. Children get it, young adults get it, it is an equal opportunity virus.  Attitudes like yours is why it continues to spread.  Good day.

That  type of full lockdown is not justified by this new outbreak.  If they closed all bars and restaurants,  inside markets, anywhere people congregate, bar supermarkets and open air markets (restricting numbers entering )  that would be more than enough.  As usual, the scientists are being unrealistic and over egging it.  They are good at that.

I see many farang idiots doing this when visiting supermarkets.

Why hasn't the Pattaya mayor put the roadblocks back on Sukhumvit already?

He was so keen to corral the 2,500 dirty farang tourists left in the city back in May, but now that he can't blame the problems on infectious farangs, he doesn't seem to be so keen to do anything about it to keep his own law-breaking, gambling idiot countrymen under control.

It is astonishing that they are talking about doing this, only now. Samut province should have been locked down like a maximum security penitentiary since day one. That was a huge error and only Prayuth and Anutin are to blame for the unnecessary spread and second wave.

Take the heat. Prayuth should offer to resign immediately, and the people, and especially the youth, should demand that. It is their right to demand a competent leader, during an emergency, especially. So my message to the administration is this. Man up. Admit you messed this one up badly. Admit the border could have been controlled if you had devoted the tens of thousands of soldiers required then, instead of now. You dropped the ball.  It seems only fair. They were getting so much praise when they had it under control. Now, they deserve to take the heat. This thing was easier to control here,

Too many chiefs and not enough Indians.

The government needs one spokesperson.

Not en masse wannabes voicing their 20 baht worth

Yes, the good doctor who works in a University, drives a nice car and lives in a gated community doesn't think that the economy or budget should be taken into consideration in combating the CCP Wuhan Virus...aka Covid 19. I dare say, that is a bit hypocritical. I  am not a wealthy farang but I still send money every month to some Thai friends in Isan who do think that the economy and small things like food on the table should be a major part of the Covid 19 decision matrix. ...The plain simple fact is that many many many more people will die on Thai roads this year than  will EVER die of Covid 19.

Don't worry not to long and most Provincial Governors

Will start locking down just surprised its not happened sooner
