"German tourist drowns on Thai island

BANGKOK - A 27-year-old German tourist drowned Wednesday after attending the famed full moon party on one of Thailand's most popular holiday islands, police said Wednesday.

Maurice Pascal Kreuzer from Heidenburg was found dead early Wednesday on Rin beach at Phangan island, 645 kilometres (400 miles) south of here, police said.

"He died around dawn after he went swimming while drunk," Lieutenant Colonel Kosol Keankaew of the local marine police said.

The full moon party attracts thousands of revellers every month for a night of drinking and dancing on Phangan island's lush tropical beaches in the Gulf of Thailand.

Very sorry to hear of your loss.

What exactly are you trying to find out though, do you not believe he died of drowning?

Did you check with his friends already who were with him ? My condolences.

We try to recover his last hours... Friends of us met him around 2 a.m. and he seemed to be just fine. Of course everyone had few beers... but really not drunk! That's why we just can't believe that he went swimming! Also the friends of us went to the hospital he was brought to the next day and they confirmed that he was not drowned. Now we are just wondering what has happened in his last 3 hours. We know for sure that he met a lot of people and was chatting with them. Maybe we find somebody seeing him later than 2 and can tell us more... I'm posting a photo, maybe it helps to identify him...

You are saying that he did not die of drowning ? So what did the post mortem report say ? Could be anything from heart attack to drug overdose.... I am not implying that he took drugs, but if he did not die by drowning (i.e. water in lungs) and no apprent marks on his body (struggle, fight etc.) then the post mortem must surely come up with something.....

hmm i had heard a german drowned- is this the same case?

That's what they first said. But we just can't believe he is drowned... and no water found in his lungs. It will take 2-3 months to get the final report. That's why we try to find out something before. Some people must have seen when he was found! So question is if his clothing was wet at this point of time or if he was just laying at the beach etc.

Okay, you say it takes 2-3 month to get the final report. (I assume you mean the autopsy from the hospital in Thailand). If no water in lungs, then it can not have been a drowning.

I also assume the body has been already sent back to Germany and if you really want to find out the cause of death, I would get another post mortem to be performed there.

Did he still have his wallet, watch, necklace etc. when he was found ? What are his friends who travelled with him saying to all of this ?

I can't imagine that an autopsy was performed at the local hospital in Koh Phangan, I doubt they even have facilities for it.

I'll be honest with you here, thousands of people attend these parties, 99.99% of them are extremely drunk or on drugs. Most people take a swim in the ocean in the early morning. It is most likely your friend's death was merely bad fortune and bad judgment on not only his part but that of his friends. Look for an explanation if it makes your thoughts rest easier, but I wouldn't expect another explanation other than that.

Sorry if that makes you feel bad but I have seen the results of the party for many many years. And more often than not, people get far drunker than they think possible. And sometimes, the results are bad.

The autopsy has been done meanwhile in Bangkok and right now he is on the way back to Germany. We were informed that the autopsy papers will not be delivered before 2-3 months. We know that nothing brings him back... However, it would just help us to accept and understand if we would know bit more details. We just can't believe that on a party with thousands of people nobody realised that he come to death! Somebody must have tried to rescue him, or somebody must have taken him out of the water, or sombody must have called the police!!! We do not have any of this information which leaves just a large blank open for us....

Do you know the name of the resort he was staying at? You might try contacting the owners to see if they knew who he went to the party with.

As for who pulled him out, etc, well there were literally thousands of people there, most of them drunk. Unless it was a friend, you are unlikely to get details as most people would have left by now.

There is a rescue squad on Koh Phangan, but I don't know if they would have been the ones to deal with this or not. The nurse who goes with the ambulance (well, pick up truck really) speaks some English, but not much. I am afraid I don't have their number but perhaps someone can look it up for you.

Sorry about your friend.

I've seen people collapse in a busy nightclub and others keep dancing around them. Others slump under tables and nobody bothers to check them. When drugs, booze, and music mix, people's brains turn to mush and they don't act in ways that you'd expect. It's not the least bit surprising to me that nobody would question your friend going swimming, passing out on the shore too close to the water or anything else that would normally cause alarm.

I hope there is another autopsy possible in Germany.

He arrived this morning in Frankfurt and the german national police does not free him. We called and they say his body can't get released until another autopsy is done, no further information. So we wait to see what information we can get out of it.

He stayed in a small resort on Koh Samui, together with 2 friends. The two of them saw him last time around 2 at night. That time he was feeling well, not drunk at all (of course they were drinking some beers but not as drunk as you would say he doesn't know anymore what he was doing. They scheduled to meet another time at 3 to decide if they stay longer or go back to the resort, but he did not show up anymore. The friends of us tried to find him, and finally called the police. It took a long way for them to even find out that he died and with the barriers of language they just went through a true nightmare the following days as you can imagine. Meanwhile we have a good contact you can translate between Thai and german... so if you could find out for us the phone number of the nurse we might give it a try and let our translator call for us! Could you do that?

One more news we have on this subject is, our friend arrived this morning at Frankfurt Airport in Germany. The german state police did not release him for the final home transportation. On the question why, the only answer we got is that the police report from kind of struggles and does not give a true answer. It says something like "most likely drowned". So he will be kept for another autopsy done here in germany. Let's see if there is more information we can get out of this.

Thats a step into the right direction. At least you will find out the real cause of death and I still cannot believe it was drowning. It would not surprise me if its heart failure (may be caused by an illegal substance)> Ican't help with the phone number, but may be SBK can assist with the number of the hospital there.

how old ws he?

what did he look like?

how tall?

where did he stay whilst in Thailand?

was the death suspicous or was it a case of being slightly drunk and trying to swim and getting carried under

who was he travaling with.

did he use drugs?

what was his character quite.? highly strung? did he have a girl friend. thai or forang?

the best way to find out what happened is to trace everything he did up to his death.

unless you don;t think it was suspsicious.

normally when people die. it is normal to lok for someone to blame. maybe there is smeone but i don;t know on the info that has been given on here and i ain't a police man but would like to help if possible.

You've seen people collapse in night clubs? what did YOU do to help? :o

Sorry for your loss, but even if it were something suspicious the chances of you ever really knowing what happened is pretty remote. I doubt you'll get much help from thai authorities. :o

Posted

Honestly, brit, it is unlikely anything suspicious happened. I cannot count how many people come back the next day talking about how they didn't drink that much but got drunker than usual. Combine heat, exercise (dancing) and dehydration with an atmosphere where everyone is drinking heavily, and most people find themselves drunker than usual.

if u want a proffesional then you can hire a private detective from pattaya to do some digging but as someone said it sounds more like an accident but anything is possible

Cursory examination, check vitals, move them to a quiet area. If unconscious but breathing, put in a recovery position and call an ambulance. Rarely got more serious than that. Usually heat exhaustion made worse by alcohol and/or ecstasy or whatever else their friends told them wouldn't hurt them. SBK is very right about how these things get away on people.

SBK- I know, people become silly at Full Moon Parties and this sort of thing happens. I've seen it first hand and I dare say it prob happened in this case. :o

However I think OP is implying otherwise, and I was suggesting even if it were a suspicious death chances of knowing what really happened would be remote under those circumstances.
