If you are really bored and read the whole article, he says his job was really fun and cant wait to get back!

Hmm, can think of more fun things to do rather than load of old men queuing up to sample the starfish!

Perhaps one is not aware that most bargirls/boys are not engaged in horizontal folk dancing every minute of their existence. The most amount of time they spend in a farang bar is spent socialising with each other and the customers. If they work in a popular bar life is a party, interspersed with an occasional interlude in a farang's hotel room.

Even in a less popular bar it's better than working in a rice field or working in a sweat shop, and they only need a couple of "interludes" a week to make far more money than they would working in a 7 11 or a shop.

I chatted with a sex worker in Phuket years ago. She had started working the trade, in her

teen, as she had been raped by her dad, and brother.

I asked many bargirls if they had ever been treated badly by the farang men they "went out with". None said they had been.

It's an attractive life for a young woman with little education and few prospects other than a low paying job in a sweat shop or the rice fields. Bar life can be a party, booze is readily available ( often paid for by customers ) and sex pays better than a real job.

Most only do it for a couple or few years and it's not usually regarded as a life time occupation. I guess many hope to find a rich farang that will marry them.

Sometimes they even have regular farang "visitors" that will take them out of the bar for a week or two, or even longer. They get fed, free booze, lotsacash and are not expected to do much more than have sex, something most people enjoy. Sometimes they even get to go to a beach for a nice holiday.

You won't find many Thais having 'empathy and respect' for prostitutes, quite right too.

In many more enlightened countries sex work is a legal occupation. Removes the criminality and allows for regular health checks and collects taxation from owners of premises used and the workers.

Sure, I accept that.

In a lot of cases it's generational, since the Vietnam War.

Gran was a hooker, mum was a hooker, aunt was a hooker etc.

The big money from the previous generations still being p*ssed away so now their children also have to continue to go on the hook.

Over the decades and decades of money sent for sick buffalo, and cheap brides for lonely western men supporting extended Thai families in Issan, you would think Issan would be a wealthy province by now, but no.

Obviously I didn't ask all those mothers if they were hookers when they were young.

But I met what I would call hard working farmer parents who did their best for their kids including school.

And then one of their daughters decides to become a hooker. It must be a schock for the parents - at least I would think so.

But it's not exactly something I want to discuss with them.

And often it's the greed of their parents.

If one is poor, is it always greedy to want to make money?  For some there may be a morality issue with turning to prostitution, but surely a rich Wall Street trader who wants to make more money would be just as "greedy".

Personally I have no problems at all if people decide they want to participate in that business.

But I hate it when I see that mothers send, or should we say "sell", their daughters into the nightlife business and then they demand big money from their daughters. The mothers know what the daughters have to do to make more money. Is this really what a mother should demand from her daughter? I don't think so.

So, is it greed from their parents, or the free choice of their daughters?

Are you suggesting it's tourism, even "war tourism" from Vietnam War days, corrupted many Thai's, and continues to do so until the present?

Does it have to be one or the other?

I know one girl who had sex with a few boys in her village, no baby. Then her mother told here something like "if you want to <deleted> around then work in that business and send me the money". And obviously the daughter had to do what the mother demanded.

I know another girl who studied and worked in accounting, according to her she made 16k per month. She has a son and wanted him to go to a good school. So she decided to work at night and make a lot more money so that her son could go to a good school. It was her decision. Later she found a super rich guy. The last time I saw her she told me "I never though you can have everything and be unhappy." She lives with the rich guy in a luxury apartment and has lots of money to spend...

As usual people do whatever they do not always for the same reasons.

I accept there are many different situations and motivations, but I was asking in a more general sense, as in, the majority.

A lot of Thai boyfriends push their Thai girlfriends into turning tricks in the tourists areas.

Should read:

How The Pandemic Has Upended The Lives Of Thailand's Sexpats.

I'm not sure that's true.  Most "sexpats" who live here will already a supply of Line contacts and phone numbers for their regulars, so are probably saving money from barfines.  The sex tourists who visit are missing out but I wouldn't classify them as "sexpats".

Who really knows?

As usual many people tell lies, not just to us, but also to their friends and families.

Most of the time when I hear any stories I listen and maybe I ask some questions. And I might get an impression if it's true or not. But I don't think I know the truth and it would be way too much work to try to establish the whole truth.

I really know as I had a bit of a thing with a nightclub doorgirl who used to listen to the locker room talk.

She always said 30% did it because they liked sex with random guys, 30% did it for the drugs and party life, and 30% did it because they wanted the money. I believed her, and the girls had no reason to lie to her.

OK I'll explain it to you. The sex workers should obviously try to save and not get into debt, what alternative do you suggest?

LOL. When I was their age I didn't save and I got into debt. As I'm a deal older now I do save and I haven't been in debt for 40 years, but age and experience imparts a more realistic view of the world.

Anyway, most of them don't earn that much and they are expected to send a reasonable amount home to support their families ( and possibly a scum bag boyfriend is living off them as well ), which doesn't leave them much to save anyway.

However, in Utopia I'm sure all the bargirls do save everything they earn for their old age.

No laborers can't, but my 'poor' SIL from Surin did one for 1.5 mil after working her way through Uni and working at a bank for several years, so I do know about costs. Youngsters do not have to become laborers or sex workers, but if they do become prostitutes moaning about the customers drying up does not get any sympathy from me, or most decent Thais.

I laughed like a drain about your most decent Thais comment.

Perhaps you are unaware that the THAI nightlife scene makes the farang scene a pimple on the backside of an elephant in comparison.

Apparently, some posters on TVF think that being a prostitute is immoral, 55555555555555555. Compared to western bankers that destroyed the lives of millions in 2008 a Thai prostitute is a beacon of morality.

People do what they have to do to make money.

I am very sure they don't enjoy their job. I think if I was getting groped, mauled, abused and occasionally raped to make a living I would enjoy my free time.

This guy was doing the right thing for his family and enjoying his free time

A lot of the workers send as much as they can back to the families.

Most of them deserve empathy and respect.

I think if I was getting groped, mauled, abused ................................

LOL.

A lot of young western women apparently spend their time doing all that for free, or so they complain on the media.

I started a pension at 18, it is possible for young people to save money you know for a rainy day. This pandemic might teach them something
