House Democrats ask Trump to testify at his impeachment trial

Featured Replies

As much as I hate the guy I think congress has more pressing matters at hand that they are ignoring.  Let the DOJ worry about Trump and get back to work maybe.

Great stuff .. if it's a Bible he has to swear on can we expect a bolt of lightning straight through the ceiling from the Lord above vapourising him with nothing left but smouldering shoe soles ..

  • Senators have no power to rule on constitutionality. I assume you knew that already because its so basic.

The real reason was to inflate a fake excuse to acquit the  blatantly guilty Mr. trump. The charge is inciting an insurrection. Most of the Republicans are too chicken to consider that charge directly.

What happens if Trump is not convicted?

The Democrats could pass a resolution to "censure" Trump or invoke a section of the 14th Amendment to the Constitution to try and have him disqualified from holding office in the future.

Unconstitutional, but no surprise as the whole thing has been declared unconstitutional by 45 Senators, thus a conviction is impossible.  Also, Trump's lawyers have said he will not testify.

This is a waste of time and money.

Nope. This forces the hands of the ridiculous crooked (R) Senators to go on record. They swear an oath, then they will either convict based on the facts or swear fealty to Trumpism. They are in a tight spot, cuz this will give all KINDS of ammunition against them (for those running in 2022).

Not sure. They may just repeat endlessly that It's unconstitutional to judge a former president, and avoid addressing the core issue.

President Trump will not be convicted or otherwise prevented from running for office.

Well, the Supreme Court failed in their part in the process to enshrine the Trump dynasty  -  make no mistake, Donald Junior was being lined up - maybe Trump did learn something when he "fell in love" with North Korea's Kim - what deeply unpleasant imagery is created by that thought?

Anyway, the Supreme Court, thought to have been bought and paid for, bottled it. So now the bearers of the truth are the Republican Senators!

Perfect opportunity to put his money where his mouth is and give evidence of the voter fraud. Refusing to do so is proof he has nothing.

Indeed....he should be chomping at the bit to appear.....show the world the evidence he has of the election being stolen, of voter fraud...etc.....this is the perfect opportunity.....I wonder he doesn't that?????

They'll never get the stench of the incinerated fat out of the Senate chamber.

But hold on, if there is one thing DT cares about it's television ratings, and if it were advertised at least a day in advance he knows his ratings would be astronomical: the guy is true to his priorities (wealth and vanity).  Could he really resist the temptation?

They might be using a bit of reverse psychology--asking him to testify knowing that he always does just the opposite.  Giving Trump more airspace is never a good thing.

You're right.  If Obama said he's right for not testifying, he would immediately call to have the private jet at the ready.

I also think if put in that position there's a good chance he'd go full Howard Beale.

Good point though he's elected not to take the opportunity from what I've read today .. the Almighty could well bide his time now as let's face it he's got a lot more than us and wait to give DT a smiting on the golf course .. if I was him I'd be looking at the sky and approaching the 13th with great trepidation from now on ..

Yeah, we remember how his supporters bloviated that 45 would get a second term.

How'd THAT work out?

(Sorry, @Surelynot - beat ya to it!  ????)

I believe the senate CAN subpoena 45 - wonder why they don't? THAT would clinch a conviction!

Trump should not testify, but instead have his lawyers present this as part of his defense:

To the President, something felt amiss. “It was all very, very strange,” Trump said on Dec. 2. “Within days after the election, we witnessed an orchestrated effort to anoint the winner, even while many key states were still being counted.”

In a way, Trump was right.

There was a conspiracy unfolding behind the scenes, one that both curtailed the protests and coordinated the resistance from CEOs.

Did you even bother to read the article?  The point of the article was the tremendous effort by all concerned to pull off a free and fair election, even with a pandemic, voter suppression, massive disinformation, and an incumbent POTUS who used the powers of the office to try and steal the election.  The last paragraph says it all...

[Democracy won in the end. The will of the people prevailed. But it’s crazy, in retrospect, that this is what it took to put on an election in the United States of America.]

Which happens every election. The loser concedes before its final. Businesses follow what is best for business, trump lost, businesses dont see an upside to follow a loser.

The rest of the article touches on things debunked by the 60 court cases that lost.

Trump lost in a fair election, the only conspiracy is to say that it wasnt.
