NEW YORK (Reuters) - Rock music legend Bruce Springsteen was arrested nearly three months ago at a national park in New Jersey on charges that included reckless driving and driving while intoxicated, a park spokeswoman said on Wednesday.

"The Boss," whose career of more than 50 years has often highlighted his home state of New Jersey and its shore scene, received the citations on Nov. 14 at Sandy Hook, a strip of beach that extends into the Atlantic just south of New York City, the spokeswoman said.

"Springsteen was cooperative throughout the process," Daphne Yun, spokeswoman for the National Park Service's Gateway National Recreation Area, said by email.

Springsteen was also cited for consuming alcohol in a closed area, she said.

Four of Springsteen's representatives, including two lawyers, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The Gateway National Recreation Area is a single park that combines Sandy Hook, part of the oceanfront section of New York City's Staten Island and Jamaica Bay and an oceanfront strip that includes Jacob Riis Park.

The celebrity news website TMZ, which initially reported the incident earlier on Wednesday, said Springsteen has a court appearance scheduled “in the next few weeks.”

Springsteen most recently came to the public eye on Sunday in a Super Bowl advertisement in which he spoke of reuniting a divided America in a two-minute video titled "The Middle" sponsored by Jeep.

On Wednesday, Jeep said it had stopped running the ad featuring Springsteen until more was known about the incident.

"It would be inappropriate for us to comment on the details of a matter we have only read about and we cannot substantiate," Jeep, a unit of Stellantis, said in a statement.

"But it's also right that we pause our Big Game commercial until the actual facts can be established. Its message of community and unity is as relevant as ever. As is the message that drinking and driving can never be condoned."

What does consuming alcohol in a closed area mean. Do they mean the beach was closed?

Parks & beaches have been unreasonably closed in the US due to covid-19.  This has angered more than just rock stars.

Seems like the Boss thinks he's still a teenager, he drove into a park by himself and started chugging alcohol.

Here's a pic of his estate in NJ.  Plenty of room there to wander & get loaded.

Springsteen blew 0.02 - quarter of legal BAC limit in DWI arrest, source says

New Jersey rock icon Bruce Springsteen’s blood-alcohol content was 0.02 — just a quarter of New Jersey’s legal limit — when he was arrested on Sandy Hook in November and charged with driving while intoxicated, a source familiar with the case told the Asbury Park Press.

The legal threshold indicating intoxication for driving purposes in New Jersey is .08, which calls into question why Springsteen was even charged with driving while intoxicated, the source said.

Bruce Springsteen was with fans, failed sobriety tests when charged with DWI, sources say

Bruce Springsteen was charged with a DWI on Sandy Hook after having a shot of tequila with fans and failing two field sobriety tests, according to sources with knowledge of his account of the incident and a federal summons made public on Thursday.

The music superstar was riding on his bike, which the summons described as a red and silver Triumph motorcycle, on Nov. 14, when he pulled over to take pictures with fans who offered him a shot, sources said.
