BANGKOK (NNT) - Researchers and scientists from Thailand and China have joined forces to launch a joint research project on weather modification, which will help improve the accuracy and speed of rainmaking operations.

In a virtual conference, the Department of Royal Rainmaking and Agricultural Aviation’s (DRRAA) Director General Surasri Kidtimonton, signed an agreement with China Meteorological Administration’s chief Duan Yihong on an exchanges of experiences, tools, technology, and personnel between the two agencies.

The agreement covers exchanges of both agencies’ researche on weather modification efficiency improvements to help relieve recurring drought and other natural disasters.

This 4-year cooperation project, which will end on 8th February 2025, will help promote both agencies’ capacity in joint training and research.

Mr Surasri said the cooperation with China Meteorological Administration corresponds with the department’s 20-year action plan on weather modification, where the department is looking to develop alternative methods to bring innovation to rainmaking operations, such as by using rockets or shooting the rainmaking chemicals into the cloud from the ground.

He said this new technology will complement the conventional method of rainmaking using aircraft, while the agreement will help keep the department’s technological knowhow up to date with climate change, and help position the department as a world leading agency in weather modification and rainmaking by the year 2037.

Does the government even care that China is sucking down the Mekong?

I dont know why Thailand would want more Rain.

They have little knowledge on how to manage the small amount they have now.

How much do you figure the Sanakham mega dam in Laos, being built just 2KM from the Thai border, is going to impact the Mekong waters in Thailand? It is no wonder why Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam are protesting what Laos is doing to their way of life where so many depend on these Mekong waters for their survival.

Build rainwater storage facilities to collect water during times of plenty to be used during times of drought. Problem soloved. Make this financially viable for all land owners by offering subsidies.

To be fair, China's dams are only withholding water that felt as rain in China. Surely Thailand is doing the same.

Why are countries along the Mekong obliged to pass the bucket downstream?

The Mekong river is one of the treasures of the earth. A few greedy people among us should not be allowed to destroy it for personal gain. It deserves protection and preservation like a national park.
