WARNER BROS.

Harry Potter star Katie Leung has opened up about her experiences of racism while working on the franchise.

The 33-year-old Scottish actress played Cho Chang – Harry's love interest and member of Dumbledore's Army – in The Goblet of Fire, The Order of the Phoenix, The Half-Blood Prince and The Deathly Hallows - Part 2.

However, speaking to the Chinese Chippy Girl podcast, Leung – then aged 16 – recalled finding a racist website purely set up to dismiss her casting in the movies.

If you go looking for it everybody in this world can find a crackpot website that offends them, but most don't go trying to stir up trouble because of it. This playing the race card is going to end in tears for all races if we aren't careful.

We live in Thailand and are not Thai. Some Thai people like us, but some do not. It's not your place to judge. Personally, I've experienced racism here, the US and the Middle East. You may not appreciate it, but black and brown Americans can be very racist.

The media made a big fuss about her because she was supposedly Harry's "love interest" ( she wasn't, as he loved another ), but she was never a significant part of the movies, IMO. I don't know why she has a dedicated hate web site, but perhaps it's related to something she did outside the movies, or perhaps jealousy or something, but I'm sure everyone in public life can find hate on the internet if they go looking for it.
